An interesting thread. Do we really care whose engine is under the bonnet of our cars? Is a Bentley any less of a car because it has a VW engine or an Aston Martin which has ( basically ) 2 Ford V6's joined together or indeed that Fiat built the beautiful V6 engine for the Ferrari Dino? Whilst I love the purity of say a Jaguar XK engine or an Alfa Twin Cam, the global market now requires a whole different set of requirements with emissions being top of the list. I for one think that the latest Ford Duratec in the Plus 4 is brilliant and, as we all know, Morgan have always bought in the best engines to suit their needs and we still love them. I will now go and hide and await the flak !! Reg Well yes we do care and thats why the manufacturers use different brand names on what are very similar if not identical cars under the skin. VW are a good example of this with the same platform being used for Skoda, VW Audi and Seat but priced very differently and marketed differently, the aim being to get higher volumes and to maximise revenue. But it doesnt stop there as you can see from the common emissions fiddling that applies to the same base engine across all brands including Audi. This link will show you which platforms the cars are on. In the end you price a product according to what you can sell it for and if inventing a name like Audi allows you to sell for more money than thats what you do. Sure you dress it up on the surface - you wouldnt get far changing just the name badge though BLMC got pretty close to doing just that. Its always been the case that small manufacturers like Morgan have used outside engine suppliers and its now becoming common with big manufacturers. For example Toyota and Citroen.

LOL.....I started writing a reply to Howard's last comment and just deleted it......realised that I just can't be bothered! Oh dear! Were you going to explain to Howard that far from being an 'invented' name, Audi has a lineage which goes back to Horch in 1909, being a Latin (near) translation of the family name that was denied to poor August Horch as a trademark. Audi as a marque pre-dates VW by over 30 years, albeit it was only resurrected as 'recently' as 1965.

I never remember the N62B48 sounding like an Aero 8 when it was in the X5 and 550. Sure it sounded good - but not THAT good.
Sometimes cars are greater than the sum of their components - sometimes less.
Clarkson harked on about the Saab 9-3 just being a Vectra underneath - but the truth was Saab changed a huge amount - incurring costs and bankrupting themselves.
The story of the 9000 was even better - platform sharing with the Italians the car was crash tested "Excellent!!" the Italians shouted "Lets have a coffee and take the afternoon off".
Meanwhile the Swedes muttered under their breaths about things not being good enough - and the project divorce began.

From the news around the next generation Boxster your wish has already come true. http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/scoop/2015-porsche-boxster-facelift-new-spy-picturesWould not fit in the Mog chassis but would be a laugh on the front of a three wheeler
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Ah, the VW flat 4, I remember those. I had a couple back then and remember the very comforting sound of it chugging away to get you home. It's a bit like when you have done sailing for the day ( and I think Howard as a fellow sailor will know what I mean ) you start the iron topsail and it chugs away to get you safely back to port. So, yes please more flat 4's but not in my Moggie please. Reg
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg
