Well yes we do care and thats why the manufacturers use different brand names on what are very similar if not identical cars under the skin. VW are a good example of this with the same platform being used for Skoda, VW Audi and Seat but priced very differently and marketed differently, the aim being to get higher volumes and to maximise revenue. But it doesnt stop there as you can see from the common emissions fiddling that applies to the same base engine across all brands including Audi. In the end you price a product according to what you can sell it for and if inventing a name like Audi allows you to sell for more money than thats what you do. Sure you dress it up on the surface - you wouldnt get far changing just the name badge though BLMC got pretty close to doing just that.

Its always been the case that small manufacturers like Morgan have used outside engine suppliers and its now becoming common with big manufacturers. For example Toyota and Citroen.

Oh dear! Were you going to explain to Howard that far from being an 'invented' name, Audi has a lineage which goes back to Horch in 1909, being a Latin (near) translation of the family name that was denied to poor August Horch as a trademark. Audi as a marque pre-dates VW by over 30 years, albeit it was only resurrected as 'recently' as 1965.

Why not go all the way and have a flat four. Im sure VW could find some old ones, with legal carbs.

I never remember the N62B48 sounding like an Aero 8 when it was in the X5 and 550. Sure it sounded good - but not THAT good.

Ah, the VW flat 4, I remember those. I had a couple back then and remember the very comforting sound of it chugging away to get you home.
It's a bit like when you have done sailing for the day ( and I think Howard as a fellow sailor will know what I mean ) you start the iron topsail and it chugs away to get you safely back to port.
So, yes please more flat 4's but not in my Moggie please.
