Whilst lurking on one of email based forum, one of the emailer suggested that the web-based forum might be easier to use than list box(which I agree) and inevitably he had a fairly big response supporting the email forum, most members list out the advantages of such forum(which i forgot what they were already ) Anyway.. I can't see what advantages that the email based forum have over the web forum Unless I'm missing something there. There're far more functions on the web forum such as active topics, watch lists, even have the option to ignore certain member's post etc etc In fact there're more functions/features on this forum than I'd ever need Someone even suggested/implied we're not that friendly...surely NOT!! May be someone could correct me ps apology for the badly constructed and rather vague post(not unusual thou )

Kin,
IMHO.....
Have to agree that web-based is better than e-mail based. With web-based, you can pick and choose your topics but with e-mail based, the whole lot hits your in-box regardless.
E-mails with a content of "Oh yes, I quite agree" might as well be spam, and push me towards "I can't be bothered to read any more of this!"
I move my Forum e-mails to a folder before I read them and I daren't say here how many un-read items there are in there!
Yes, there may be some useful info in Forum e-mails but I frequently lose the will to live before I get to anything useful.
Sorry I can't correct you!
For those who ask "Why don't you just delete the e-mails?", the answer is that there may be a nugget in there which is relevant to a problem I have encountered. With web-based, it should be under the related topic....
Simple!

May be someone could correct me Well, you got a fair bit of reasonable arguments for why email is better than web-based in that thread on the email-based list. Not going to go through them again, and as this is a web-based forum, I am assuming most people here are happier with web-based stuff. If that's what works for you, then great. I do know that I follow the email-based ones more actively than talkmorgan, because the hassle of a web-based forum detracts me, but as I stated in that email thread, am an old fart who still lives in the email era with the dinosaurs. I realize email just isn't as sexy as web 5.0, twitter and facebook (especially if you have nothing else to do all day). I am just waiting for a garage-proof keyboard so I can twitter Really Important status reports such as "tightened the front shock attachment nut" even with oily hands)

As I have said before, there is a place for both and interestingly, many members of e-mail groups have joined here (and I'm sure a few have also signed up on email groups); therefore, I believe people are happy to adapt and use both, rather than feeling the need to conform to a single style.
A forum lives or dies based on the quality of the community and the members - therefore, in my opinion format is second to content.
Moderation is another consideration. Some forums/discussion groups are actively moderated, others are much more 'relaxed' (for want of a more concise word).
Again, moderation creates the tone of the discussion and I believe people will seek out a community that works for them - format will again take a back seat to preference.
My personal choice is to a threaded online forum, purely because I believe it gives me greater control to pick and choose what I read and to sidestep the topics that are of no interest to me (all the while avoiding spurts of e-mail).

There is a place for all. The individual chooses where he feels comfortable. He chooses where he fits in best and he chooses his level. (His level includes his age group - not in years but mentality) I think this forum suits the younger, smarter, funnier, and wiser members. All others can enjoy their emails, email after email after email. Nothing better to do with their time. No fun and no humour, no sarcasm , and no wind ups. Fact is there is no difference. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s what you fancy. Its who you are, and where you fit.........anyone now want to admit to really liking the email forums. dmat

I think you may have hit a few nails on the head there Dave. I'm no spring chicken but mentality wise am probably a bit younger than my actual years I think the main difference can initially be proactivity, a web based forum requires you to physically log on to see what updates have occurred whilst an email based forum will 'push' the responses to your chosen medium (PC or phone). It takes more effort to log on but once you have done so it's so much easier to navigate and use the vast facilities available. I must admit the email forum I am a member of gives me a headache. But in the end Simon is also spot on. It's the members that really make a forum what it is. There may be an effect of the above that governs who frequents which forum and thus affects memebership. This can make a forum light airy fun open and informative; or stuffy fuddy-duddy, authoritarian and narrow-minded. Horses for courses...... Andy (mental age a lot less than 47)
Cheers
