Here's a route taking in all the road passes in the Lakes. It includes the following:
Wrynose Pass - east/west
Dunnerdale
Ulpha Fell
Wasdale
Hardknott Pass
Wrynose Pass - west/east
Greater Langdale
Red Bank
Thirlmere
Derwent Water & Borrowdale - north/south
Honister Pass - east/west
Buttermere
Crummock Water
Whinlatter Pass
Newlands Pass
Honister Pass - west/east
Derwent Water & Borrowdale - south/north
Ullswater
Glenridding
Kirkstone Pass & The Struggle
Wrynose and Honister Pass are driven both ways. Although the detour into Wasdale is not a logical part of the route, it's a worthwhile addition to it.
Total Distance: 140 miles
Total Time: Depends when done - best early morning or evening. Slow and tedious during the day in high season.
Scenically the route includes the best of the Lake District.
Ken, Our local Land Rover group meet every now and then to do these very same routes, some of the guys reside in the Lakes so know them well.

Ken,
Our local Land Rover group meet every now and then to do these very same routes, some of the guys reside in the Lakes so know them well. John, don't they prefer to go off-road? Something like the Walna Scar Road would be more of a challenge for a group of 4WD's.

Good one that. I'm holding off until at least 2017 though as I'd like to see Windermere Steamboat Museum once it is in the new buildings.  and I visited several years ago - an open day as part of the national one day parks/gardens/heritage sites open days. It was our last day of a Lakeland holiday and we were heading home...

Graham, Now that's somewhere on my list of must see. I used to skipper a few steam boats on the Broads and engineer on another. Nothing quite like a steam launch for breaking the speed limit as they are so quiet with little or no wash. Reg
