SogMog flood defences
As an addendum to recent posts regarding the flooding to my village of Croston and the flooding of my house and Morgan, we have bolstered our defences with sandbags infront of the garage
Hopefully SogMog will not be repeated
The drive is sloping back to the garage with a soak away infront of the garage door so my son and I have been creative, thinking that we can divert the flow of any flood water with an arrowhead of sandbags

Croston was well featured on BBC News just before. I hope you and the e dry body else manage to keep Storm Frank at bay. I am disappointed Stewart that you didn't arrange the sandbags in the shape of an 'M'!

Was sorry to read about the flooding in your house and garage Stewart.
As someone who's been lucky enough to not be involved with flooding before, can I ask, and this may sound foolish, but do sand bags really work?

Yes we've been watching that Chinook helicopter most of the day That breach in the Douglas river is about a quarter of a mile away at the end of the village where we are so we and our neighbouring roads and houses are still on a red alert I hope I'm not eating my words tomorrow but I can't see us getting hit again tomorrow by storm Frank as it looks to be less severe than the rain storm on Boxing Day and it seems to be hitting areas more Northerly I sincerely wish all an internally dry holiday and New Year

As someone who's been lucky enough to not be involved with flooding before, can I ask, and this may sound foolish, but do sand bags really work? This is the first time I've deployed sandbags so I really don't know with certainty I spent all day yesterday helping some in the centre of the village who have been flooded before three years ago and because of that weren't insured against flooding ( insurance company wanted a huge premium with a £10K excess) They deployed sandbags around all doors but the water was extremely high at nearly a metre high so the bags didn't make a blind bit of difference Others put bags along their driveways and it did seem to protect their houses when the water was lowish and flowing past down roads My house was hit on several fronts - water coming up from drains, water flowing down roads and run off from the fields next door The house was completely surrounded by water but only just over the main house threshold Had I had these sandbags in place I think I would have been water free internally so I would recommend them - better to be safe than sorry

That I think is the nub of the problem. There is just so much water about it will get you one way or another. Fingers crossed for you all. It was shocking also to see the old stone bridge in Tadcaster collapse too.

Was over at Tadcaster when the bridge went...very bad effect on moral of locals who have been advised to evacuate immediatly.
My favourite beer Sam Smiths is brewed here and they have had to move the drey horses to safety. Unbelievabe force of the river Wharfe..we are totally helpless as volunteers to stop the force of nature.
Well placed and interlocked sandbags do work..I learned from the Enviroment agency many years ago how to use them to good effect..saved our village (Cawood) many times since 2000
My heart goes out to all affected.
