Hi. Can anyone out there please explain to me the process of adding a photograph to my profile?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Click 'My stuff' in the second menu near the top of a forum page.

Then in the drop down menu, click on the second item down, 'Edit profile'.

You then get a page with all the profile information, and near the bottom, your current 'avatar' with the details of how to replace it. Yours is blank, but it's easy to put one in. Gifs can be moving if you have one, that's how mine is done.

Anyone any idea what that means in plain speak that a luddite can understand? I need an idiots guide in how to do stuff on a computer, I thought Avatar was a film and no idea what a Gif is unless its something to do with the bloke who used to work with Mel Smith?

I'm rather a Luddite too but Wikipedia tells us...

In computing, an avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego or character. It may take either a three-dimensional form,[1] as in games or virtual worlds, or a two-dimensional form as an icon in Internet forums and other online communities.[2][3] Avatar images have also been referred to as "picons" (personal icons)[4] in the past, though the usage of this term is uncommon now. It can also refer to a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs.[5] It is an object representing the user. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.

The Graphics Interchange Format (better known by its acronym GIF /ˈdʒɪf/ jif or /ˈɡɪf/ ghif) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987[1] and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel for each image, allowing a single image to reference its own palette of up to 256 different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of up to 256 colors for each frame. These palette limitations make the GIF format less suitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

None the wiser... laugh2

I'm tempted to say 'if you can't follow that you're wasting your time evil

But, first off, follow the instructions, until you click the 'submit' button, nothing will happen so it's safe to have a look and not go anything. If you go to the page, you will see what to do.

Avatars were around long before Hollywood based a film around an incorrect meaning of the word.

Fair enough, I am clearly wasting my time asking for help.

Colin, I fiddled around and it seemed to work ok. I found an image I liked and uploaded it to photobucket. That gave me a URL that I copied into the box at the bottom of my profile on TM. Similar to posting a photo on here..

I'm sure someone who knows this kind of thing better than me will be along to explain it more clearly..

Thanks Steve

I followed the 'advice' and got as far as it needing a URL (whatever that is) I suspect I need to have a photo stored on a site somewhere but spending the last couple of years of my working life training people in child protection matters meant I saw some things on the internet that I wish I had never seen, my wife works as a child protection officer as well so I am rather against any kind of photos being stored on websites or in clouds or whatever they are. Consequently all my photos are on my laptop, I fully realise that may be over sensitive but even our home computers are subject to audit and examination because of my wife's job so its simpler to just not do it rather than fill in pages of justification forms....... I will leave it as it is, only going to put up a daft photo of me pressing in some bushes anyway so nothing interesting ;-). After spending hours a week typing up step by step information on fixing cars for owners (and quite a few on here) its a bit disappointing when you ask for help to get a smart arse answer isn't it.

Knowledge is power they say.. I'm afraid I'm rather useless at computer and IT stuff... give me a gearbox or engine and i'll rebuild it without any issues but techy talk might as well be in Chinese.

I've managed to find a fairly lowly level of skill with excel, word and powerpoint etc, enough for most things but I must confess I don't really have much of an interest in trying to improve.

If it helps you could PM me and send your pic via e mail to me and i'll load it in my photobucket library ..

Brilliant thanks Steve.....just doing it now, something to throw darts at if it does not work ;-)

Cheers Buddy (PS When I am stuck I normally ask Graham and Tim H. ;-), and that's a regular thing ;-))
