After 10000km and no bevel box oil change... I found some redline oil to look at that noisy-scary thing !

I was expecting some black oil to flow from the drain plug but... Here below what I could see:



I tried to flush and refill with RedLine 80W140... Tomorrow test drive to see if something change.

I didn't choose the redline heavy shockproof since the 80w140 seems to have higher specifications : MIL-L-2105E and SAE J2360. Anyone has tried it ?

I flushed the black goo out of the BB with diesel, then filled, flushed and filled again with Millers EP140. BB quiet as a mouse. Well I think it is, can't really tell because of the noise coming from the screaming rear pulley. Which by now should be at Supermax

Did I mention my BB verture?
After driving my MW3 for a few thousend miles the Bevel Box noise got so loud you couldnt hear youself speak, let alone the engine or even the exhaust. So after trying all sorts of oils and remedys I found here in the forum, even having taken it apart and renewing the bearings I decided to simply buy a new one. I did´nt P-ex my old one but kept it just in case, besides shipping from Germany to GB costs half as much as Morgan would have refunded:-/
The "new" BB I recieved did´nt really look new, sort of used, as if it had been run for a while. I called Morgen on this and they assured me all the internals were new and the box had been tested. So off I went, big smile on my face, brand spanking new and very expensive BB and what can I say? NO NOISE:-) What a pleasuse, no funny lookes from scared pedestrians and onlookers, I could actually hear the engine again. The loudest noise on the car came at speed from the Blockleys I have on the front. Up until about 300 Kilometer when a fimiliar wine from the rear set in:-) OK an oil change is reccomended at 500K´s so I did that at 300k´s tryed different oils, even imported Climbing Oil from america but to no effect. After abot 600K´s the new box was just as loud as my old one. Morgan agreed to look into the matter but at the same time made all kind of suggestions as to what I could have done wrong with the box swear So back it went and the old BB was reinstalled. Months passed and finally I recieved a call from Morgen stateing that they planned to install my Box in a chassis and go for a trial run. OK I thought, see what they come up with, Months passed again and a big heavy parcel arrived from Morgan, big smiles all round, that should be my new BB thumbs But what a surprise!
In Germany they say "ich bin aus allen Wolken gefallen" which translated means "I fell out of the clouds, Clouds of illusion in this case the illusion of a quiet BB.
What Morgan has sent me is a very used and dirty BB with a rusted and worn belt wheel, corroded bolts and casing.
Can you imagine how I feel? What would you do in my situation?

During the service over this last week I drained and re-filled my BB with Millers EP140 the same as last year. At this point the rear wheel had not been re-fitted so I ran the engine and BB in all gears up to about 4000 rpm.

I put a stethoscope on the main casing and also the pinion end of the BB to listen for any irregular noises, it was that quiet it sounded like a well oiled sowing machine.

The rear wheel is now back on with Supermax pulley, belt tensioned to their recommendations (3/4") deflection then ran her up to 4000rpm in fifth WOW its never been as quiet. Last year it was screaming like a banshee.

Cant wait for the spring to do a proper road test.

at what mileage have you had your rear sprocket rebuilt by Supermax ? I have 3500 miles on my 2012 vehicle, the sprocket looks fine but I have a lot of aluminium dust under the seats and the belt is whining: how long can it last ? Should I take advantage of the winter months to get it rebuilt or will it last another season ?

I am having second thoughts about this recent 'looser' tension initiative.
With this amount of vertical movement in the centre of the belt I am now getting loud 'thonks' from the back end on hard acceleration when changing up a gear.
I believe it is the slack being taken up on changing up a gear and applying power. Normal driving/changes are ok. I only get it on hard acceleration and on applying a lot of power having changed up.
If the weather improves I will tighten the belt slighty and retest.

Could be. If I can rig up a decent mount I might put my Gopro down there to check - if we get a half decent weekend weather wise.

Have a look at the photo on this link Robby, if it looks like the worn sprocket the only long term cure is to replace it.

Cleaning and silicone spray will help but only for a few miles. Both the alloy sprockets I have replaced have only lasted 3 or 4 thousand miles. Hopefully the current steel one I have fitted will last much longer. If I was buying a new one the Supermax looks to be the best way to go and value.
