I decided to replace the door hinges as they were getting very badly worn. On talking to John at Heart of England he advised me that the cheaper alternative was to buy oversized S/S replacement pins and ream the hinges out.

To increase the pin size from 1/4 inch to 7mm I purchased a 17/64th drill bit and a 7.00mm HSS Parallel Hand Reamer.

I used my model makers lathe, mounting the hinge on the milling attachment and drilling out to 17/64th (6.7469mm) and then reamed out to 7.00mm by hand using a four pin chuck, (tip-never turn the reamer counter clockwise as it will quickly dull the cutting edges)

The doors have been re-mounted and are like new.

I see a business opportunity here....how much to ream a set of door hinges and supply new pins??

Top work - I could not replace my hinges on my '76 with John W's stainless ones as I have the older design ones. So I buffed them up. They could do with new pins in due course!

I wish I had the skills to use a set up like that: I am OK with wood, but metal? No!

Why?

Aldermog, built in 2009, had the modern, cast stainless steel hinges. I took them off to replace the steel set screws holding them to the body and the steel wood screws holding them to the door: both had rusted.

The hinges are polished on the outside, but on the inner faces that are visible when the door is opened they are quite rough. What they need is to be surface milled to a mirror finish....

So, a neat little business opportunity for anyone with the skills. Morgan Door Hinge upgrades, both old and new style and supplying the correct size set screws and wood screws with polished heads.

On Tarka I replaced the screws: they were already starting to rust after just 18 months. But if I could get properly polished hinges as an exchange set....!!

Looks like a job very well done. Would love my own lathe.

This will be my next option for my drivers side door.
So far not much play but the H of E route is the one to do.
I don't have a lathe but would have to set up the hinges in a vice on my drillstand and line it up carefully.
HoE pins and reamer is a very cost effective solution.
