When I tighten the screw which holds the rim on the n/s Headlamp, the rim jumps out of the retaining lugs at the top of the headlamp. Wont do this if I undo the screw a couple of turns

Rim does not look to lie flush all around against the glass of the headlamp, and I cannot see anything restricting it.

Headlamps are Wipac Quadoptics ! appear to be held in by screw and clamp plate the rear of the glass housing.

Think I may change headlamps.

Any suggestions !

Check the back to back size and of the rim against the other side, you may find one is slightly larger than the other. Replace the badly fitting one or use packing at the screw to tighten the rim down against the retaining lug at the top.
