Great stuff
Now this may be interesting.
My old girl has never been a great starter. Always took a good few seconds and some deft and light throttle work.
I charged the dead battery with an acumate unit for 2 days and tried to start. Got the usual slow turnover and the old girl didnt want to know.
Today I tried a charger starter unit I borrowed from work. Wow. What a difference!!!
Instant start. Now the charger unit has a cranking capacity of 150 Amps so not massive compared to a reasonable battery.
I have never understood the lazy starting of the 3W. Its even come ted on in most of the reviews as an endearing feature of the car.
In my view its not endearing and puts to much strain on the starter motor.
I want to seriously uprate the battery capacity

Matty, I think that's the one..!

Odyssey are good batteries, and all gel so no more topping up and with a CCA of 380, that S&S should spin like top..

I think the terminal polarity is the opposite to the standard battery, though..

Nice one..

Mine churns for a good 10 -15 seconds before showing any signs of starting - even if I try the turn the ignition on and off 2 or 3 times.

Once it's had the first start of the day it's fine.

I wonder if it could be down to the battery?

Mine is exactly the same...and I sit awaiting someone to ask if I'm ok...

I think it would be worth trying the extra 150 amp capacity again, maybe..?

If I dont have mine on the battery conditioner , say we have gone away from home in it for a few nights then the speed of churn drops of somewhat , and the time to catch extends. There may be a link.
Also after a service at the dealers I find it catches easier, I am wondering if this could be due to spark plug change / clean.

Mine is the same, the battery is always connected to a battery conditioner when in the garage, even then I have had one instance in the cold where there was not enough oomph to start the engine before I flattened the battery. It doe seem slightly better if the full pump is primed 3 times before pressing the starter button.

I have had a similar problem with my 1971 4/4, which has a mechanical fuel pump, in cold weather by the time the engine had turned enough times to prime the pump the battery was dead. I used to put a fan heater under the sump for an hour before trying to start and that usually did the trick. When the battery finally need replacing I fitted the largest I could in the space available and went from 330 CCA to 600 CCA, starting is no longer a problem.

So if CCA is the solution this battery fits the bill having 540 CCA and is listed as a replacement for that in the M3W, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BATTERY-LITHIU...E-/191469157564
The downside is £165

Another one 400 CCA

£97

Is the standard battery sealed for life or does it need topping up?
