I'm looking for a ray gun which will fry car electronics from a distance. So when somebody does something which requires punitive action, a single blast from the ray gun would melt the ECU.

Alternatively a metal liquidising ray gun would be handy on occasions.

So far, no luck on e-bay.

Some of my most scariest experiences were whilst driving in Naples & Rome.

was driving the other day when we came across an idiot dawdling along in the third lane of a 4 lane carriageway with lanes 1 & 2 empty. dutifully pulled out to lane 4 overtake rather than risk going down the inside. As we went past I signalled from the passenger seat that he should pull over into the empty lanes - to be met by blank looks. Obviously not aware he was doing anything wrong!

You have to catch the spirit! No traffic rules but there will be always a space available for you when needed...

Swiss drivers are some of the most aggressive drivers I have come across - only when outside Switzerland though!

I remember in Naples driving along a one way street & people on scooters riding towards on scooters weaving in and out of the traffic. Then driving a long a street where there was double parking on the opposite side and single parking on our side. I drove like an Englishman expecting the person on the opposite side to wait for me to come through, assuming I had right of way, but he charged through the gap and we got so close that we lost both door mirrors off our company pool car!

When in Italy drive like an Italian. It takes a while but once you get into the rhythm it all works. There are so many cars in Italy that if everyone obeyed the speed limits the country would grind to a stop.

Unlike France where the speed limits and broken white lines (for overtaking) seem to be reasonable Italy has a bunch of bureaucrats that want to avoid being given the blame for anything so speedlimits are often ridiculously low and the white line is often unbroken even on long straights. Along the lake we have 40km of road that is all posted at 50 kph and they have just removed the only 100 metres where overtaking was permitted.

The result is that people ignore the rules and drive at the speed they perceive to be safe and overtake where they see any opportunity. It can be a bit nervewracking until you get used to it.

It all seems to work reasonably well except for pedestrian crossings. It is almost not a joke to say that the pedestrian crossing is a more dangerous place to cross in Italy than other parts of the road.

In England we drive on the left. In France they drive on the right. In Italy they drive in the shade...

True about pedestrian crossing in Italy...nearly wiped out by Police car whilst mid crossing in Lecco last Nov.

They just scowled as if I shouldn't have been there..very scary !!!!.
