Have spent a couple of hours this afternoon trying to get the reversing lights to work on my 4+4 1992 mog. Have checked fuses and bulbs ,am not much of an electritian ,any ideas

Could be the reversing light switch - it's in the top of the gearbox. If it is, it's probably moved out of alignment, rather than having expired.

Either that or a connection has come loose or dirt has got into it giving a bad connection?

Onions, not sure about them Frank. Know a bit more about garlic after last night's Countryfile though  I've only had two reverse switches fail, both on a pal's mini and another on a B reg 90 belonging to another pal (both went short circuit to ground - blew fuse whenever reverse was selected). Good thinking on checking the wiring - I've had a connector fall off more than once. Cheers,

getting out and under is always good, had an odd few engines in my garage to strip down and tinker with just for fun, bike engines are unbelieveable bits of engineering!!!

getting out and under is always good, had an odd few engines in my garage to strip down and tinker with just for fun, bike engines are unbelievable bits of engineering!!! Too many years ago to remember, I spent a wonderful school holiday in the 50's at a breakers yard dismantling engines to separate the Aluminum and the Brass, head to toe in muck and oil; luvly'  That did help a bit in later years but I still managed to put a kink in the con rod of my first bike (BSA Bantam) replacing the small end bush with a Hammer and large bolt. After I had bent it upright again without snapping it and tapped home the new bush with same hammer and wood, someone, who knew about these things introduced me to having the right tools and a lot more experience. Happy Days.

If the fuse is OK....is it OK??? Next you should lift the Mog securely and get your head under the gearbox. On one side will be a plug with two wires. If you're really unlucky it will be on the top....... One wire (the feed) will be live when the ignition is on. Pull each wire off in turn and test with either a multimeter, or test lamp. Wrap a small piece of red insulating tape round the live wire for future reference. If neither is live go back to step 1. If the fuse is OK, there's a break in the circuit - probably a corroded connector. Next select reverse gear and test that the other wire on that switch becomes live. If it doesn't - jiggle the switch about. If you can get it out (unscrew) you may be able to dismantle and clean the contacts. Once the second wire is energised by that switch, test the power at the lamp. If no power look for dodgy connectors. If power - look for a dodgy bulb holder, or dodgy earth.
