I'm amazed by how easily the paint on the front end and rear wheel arches of my car chips. I'm now thinking of buying a new car and am considering paint protective film. As I see it, one of the downsides is that it can be fairly unsightly as the edge of the film can be very noticeable.

Is it less unsightlty on some body colours than others?

Given the cost of sticky back plastic we all know from our Blue Peter days, is it value for money or is it better to factor in the cost occasional touch-ups?

Alot depends upon who fits it and what film they use.

There are some quite thick films around which you can notice on the edge. However if you opt for soemthing like Venturesheild film then it is thin and does not go 'orange peely' with time.

Also depends on how much is covered. Ideally the film matches to existign panel lines rather than cuts across a panel, however this not always possible.

For a Morgan try Russell at Defendall www.defendall.com. He has templstes for most Morgans and is factory approved.

Silver is probably the best colour for not showing chips and swirl mark scratches But hard to match should you require panel spray matching.for any reason...

If you have a dark coloured car, why not just go to a bodyshop to have the front end resprayed for a couple of hundred pounds.

Or...instead of plastic films such as Venture shields or Defendal, why not try car wraps matched to the same colour as yours and part wrapped the car(in your case, front end and rear wheel arches), no yellowing of the films to worry about Providing the wraps is exactly same colour as your car, of course...

that's why I did stick to standard color on mine

I simply touch them up, with a very thin artist's paint brush, so the paint "drop" will not be too thick. Works perfectly with my black wings. But it also worked with yellow on my former car, even though the touch-up paint was not exactly matching.

And when there will be too many touch-ups, I will bring the car in, for a decent paint job.

i've seen russells defendall work when i was at RPM morgan, he showed my friend Nick his aero 8 with the film and the edges are totally invisible. looks great! can be quite costly to do but its cheaper than resprays and is an added bonus if you come to sell.

Yes 3M UK Plc do manufacture a polyurathane tape that was designed for the aerospace business and is applied on the leading edge of the 747 wings and is used in F1 racing cars to place over joints on wings to give a better air flow over the car.Their product is also used on production cars on the rear wings to stop stone chips and is applied before the car is painted and the film will except paint which gives it a better finish and is difficult to see the leading edge.The 3M code No is 8671HS

These guys also do a protective strip & I use it where the doors / side screens rub. It works well.

I agree with Graham the cameras are a constant issue given the reproducabilty and precision of Mr Morgan's instruments (they would surelfy fail a gage R&R for you Six Sigma buffs). Not quite the old Triupmh T140 Smiths combo of something aroud 30 -120 mph but still not good. I use an Inforad which works well and as it measure velocity vs NASAs finest GPS sattelites shows a good 5-10 mph swing vs the clocks.
