I'm pretty sure that the airfilter fits without the bonnet scoop but the engine benefits by have more space between the trumpets and the bonnet. If I recall someone (Cereal Surfer?) did some tests. Of course the air filter probably mucks up this theory.
I am more or less planning to fit a scoop to my car.

The scoop is uneasy on the eye, but there's little alternative. The owner who did the tuft test showed that this area has very turbulent air.

I love the scoop myself! I had one fitted to my 4/4 so that I could fit longer intake trumpets and a deeper filter on. Well that was my excuse.....I liked the look!

Yes, I like the bonnet scoop too. No excuse to fit one on my car though, the air intake sits above the radiator.
