In the days before satnavs, I used to use my Dictaphone (cue the inevitable jokes :))
I would simply record the route instructions, and play them back, hitting the pause button after each instruction until I needed the next one. For complex instructions I would record the same one two or three times so I didn't have to faff about rewinding to make sure I had got it.

My mate used a dictaphone until he was arrested! Interesting. I used to use a voice recorder when I worked - typically leaving a client and recording brief action points. Often wondered about the police's attitude. Glad I never found out. Not sure the practical of reading and trying to drive. A reasonable point, but drivers read all the time – satnavs, multi-function screens set in the dashboard, tiny buttons on radio/CD players. Not to mention the idiots who have maps draped over their steering wheels; and texting? Words fail me… At a glance tulip diagrams are meant to be just that – at a glance.

I would have thought that someone would have developed software (app) which displays the instructions on a phone/tablet based on a gps signal.

Garmin used to offer (still may do) a Heads Up Display (HUD) to project directions onto your windshield. Would certainly take the fun out of yelling the wife . . . "I can't hear you. What did you say??"

Bill Button (famed Mogger from America's Northwest) traveled with us on a road trip to Florida's Key West, and his navigator got furious with him for repetitively not following her instructions
. . . turned out he had his hearing aide turned off . . .
