Hello,
Has anyone ever tried to achieve some soundproofing with the everflex hood?
I understand most of the noise comes from engine bay and tyre friction but the equation I believe also includes wind and outside noise.... am I going the wrong direction here ? crazy3
Suppose this was the case, do you think adding a layer of quieting material + a layer of simple fabric (to cover the latter) might be feasible?

Cheers,
Vladimir

Vladimir – like you I have a 4-seater. The original hood was Everflex, but I have had that replaced with Mohair and a hood cover. A characteristic of the 4-seater hoods (compared with those of the 2-seaters) is the seemingly acres of material that has to be manipulated, particularly when taking the hood down – top two folds out, bottom fold inboard, then making a “hospital bed corner” of the sides, before tucking into the hood cover and battening down. As it happens I can do this fairly quickly, but are you sure you want to add to this palaver with an extra layer of material?

You may not want to hear this but I have chosen the opposite way – hood down and no side screens (and I use the car all year round) . Strangely I have found this less noisy and less draughty; with the imperfect road surfaces we have to endure I got fed up with constantly clattering four side-screens. And with side-screens on there was a piercing draught in the passenger foot-well; take them off and it’s gone.

So with the correct clothes and headgear - and admittedly ear defenders for dual-carriageway and motorway driving (sometimes it can’t be avoided) – I find it quieter to drive in this configuration.

It's notoriously louder with any hood up, I think because of the resonance of the chamber effect the hood makes.

I remember selling my old Midget by taking the new owner out for a drive. The Peco exhaust more than covered the whine of the diff, but with the hood up you had to shout..

Maybe having a double layer to fold down would be a bigger faff than running as is or top down..?

The ARP4 has a partially lined hood so it is possible. With the exhaust though, hard to tell If it quieten things!

Thanks you very much for your answer Steve.
I did drive actually a couple of times side screens down and hood up, and it is fine... only the rain...

Kind Regards,
Vladimir

Thanks Jay!
Could you be more specific with regards to the partial lining?...
Cheers

Could you also be more specific as to the source of the noise? Exhaust or intake? Both!

To be honest,
I'm not very much concerned with intake or exhaust: actually I do like these ;-)
I'm really bothered however with the "outside noise" (wind and induced draught mostly).
