Roger, thank you for this advise - will keep my ears open.
May the contact damage the tyres or is the car the sensible part?

I noticed my contact quite quickly so no damage to body or tyre. All is fixed and ok now. There was a small area just inside the rear wing where the black under seal had been polished back to the paint. The contact would only happen very occasionally when fully loaded with 2 people, usually on a corner and with the suspension close to bottoming. My car was not built absolutely symmetrical. There was more tyre to body clearance on one side than the other. I fitted a panhard rod in the first instance to reduce the body to axle movement. . Also I used the panhard’s adjustment to precisely centralise the axle within the body as things were a few millimetres out of symmetry. I’ve also taken other measures to stop my suspension from bottoming but that was very specific to my car. I do plan fitting the same tyres again as soon as they are 5 years old

My car was not built absolutely symmetrical. It's a Morgan Sir - they're all built in such fashion!

I changed my Michelin XAS for much less expensive Vredestein Sprint Classics 165/80-15, and they are absolutely non-inferior to the Michelins. Especially in wet they are indeed better. Don't know what the 185 wil do, may be a bit less in wet because of its with.

I changed over from the oe contis to vredstein t-trak 2s in the original dimensions 165/80R15 and have been amazed and delighted by the improvement wet and dry. The sprint classics do have a more traditional looking tread pattern, so you might prefer them on aesthetic grounds, and I believe their performance is perfectly satisfactory - but have never tried them myself. I said, I am thinking of the T-Trac 2, same size, 165/80 R15. He looked horrified and began speaking in French. "Mais ce n'est pas bon..." I think I shall take it easy through the rest of the winter and switch to T-Trac 2 next Autumn. My little 4/4 benefits from the performance of TTrac 2 and TBH the look is really quite good. The side walls are plain, the "modern" look of the tread does not disturbe so much. It is a simple and good tyre at low costs.

Vredesteins £74.79 plus local fitting on Tyreleader. Used many times, no probs.

I have found the site of this dealer. He shows the weights of all his tyres. Interesting differences regarding the CT22, Sprint Classic and TTrac2. If he has done his measurement propperly. www.vintagetyres.comchoose a tyre size and dial 165/15. Then all offers are shown. The far more decentered the weight of a wheel the more relevant it is. I.e. a more heavy spinner (two ears aganinst hexa) does not count so much than a heavier tyre. And ca. 1.5 Kg difference between a CT22 and a TTrac2 is a cheap but significant improvement ...compared with the often expensive swap for lighter rims.

Good point Heinz..I am looking at tyres for my 4/4...as I continue to modify with remap,forced air induction and soon a Librands manifold I find the Cont original tyres lacking.

Thanks all.
Based on all these recommendations I have ordered a set of T-Trac 2s from Black Circles at £222 for the four, fitted. These will replace the six year old original Contis, which are less than confidence-inspiring in the damp.
Now hoping that the local tyre outfit that will do the fitting will do a good job.
