Yes, we have a TM member who's SII emits huge clouds of smoke on startup (just spotted your post Tim)! Little difference in economy between petrol and diesel with the 2286, but the petrol version goes much better... Even the low compression "export" version which was in my very first SIIa.

One of the last of the IIa - still has the proper grille that one could put over a charcoal fire and use as a BBQ grille, but headlights have moved into the wings which was forced by legislation. Looks a "proppa" Landie that! Don't ever sell it
The plastic grille of the SIII was totally useless for BBQ duty though!

Yes, I thought our 200 Tdi was ok, we had a 1990 that we kept for 10 years. Mind you, the Td5 that replaced it is significantly better: smoother, more powerful and a much nicer drive.

Land Rover owners can be a funny lot when a new engine or other factory change came out. Going from leaf springs to coils didn't go down well with many. Going from the 300TDi to the TD5 with more electronics was the work of the Devil for some and now the latest TDCi has taken some stick as it was out of the Transit. Had them all and all have been good.

I prefer mine electronics free - less interaction with my radio equipment...

Graham, my 300Tdi was brilliant and you could fix them with a hammer and some baler twine (well almost :-) I well remember getting the TD5 and the doom mongers saying it would be a nightmare of a thing because of the electronics but I never had anything other than complete reliability.

I am toying with getting another 90 and am torn between the 300TDi, TD5 and the TDCi. I loved the TDCi because it had a brilliant heater, very un Land Rover like. It will have to be in Keswick Green however so unless I get a complete respray on a 300 it will have to be a very late TD5 or a TDCi. Decisions decisions. :-

Try the Land Rover Centre Huddersfield they always have a good selection of series vehicles normally rebuilt on galvanised chassis

As all the electronics are in the box under the driver's seat, would it not be possible to isolate them with a Faraday cage arrangement?

Yep, they are all pretty good. My neighbour is a farmer and he swears by his 300 Tdi. I've had over 100k miles out of my Td5 with no trouble at all. We have taken TDCi versions around the Eastnor Castle and they were excellent, powerful and civilised.

Which would I go for if I were looking to replace? A 2003-2006 Td5, without a doubt. The TDCi is probably a better vehicle, but it suffers from very high VED compared to the Td5.

My 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon attracted a VED of £180 when I first bought it, think it went up to £220. It may have been unusual as it was a cancelled order by the MOD White Fleet bought off Marple Rd Garage near Stockport. They had taken 18 of these from the MOD lease company, all identical with just delivery miles.
