Have they dropped the tray if you take the mudguard option?
The threaded inserts are missing for the retention bolts. As Draggin has pointed out, the tray was just loosely fitted so that it could be lifted out, in this case by another TM'er - Asbojohn who is also at the Press Days.  He's out on bail..

OK, I give up. Isn't the black plastic liner in the boot that seems to cover the rear wheel the mud guard, or have I lost my mind entirely? What is the difference?

Yes, the plastic tray in the boot acts as a mudguard to a point, keeping everything above it relatively clean and dry. But everything that is in front of the rear wheel, behind the seat backs, including the exposed seat belts on early models (like mine), gets absolutely filthy. Nothing like your wife getting all gussied up to go out in style, only to upon sitting in the Morgan pull the seat belt on and end up with a muddy-road-grimy smear on her shoulder.
