In terms of the Battle of Britain let us not forget the aircrews who flew Hurricaines and Defiants. The Spitfire was the best but the crews of the other two aircraft scrambled and many died

True Pete. And there were many more Hurricanes than Spitfires. The Hurricane was also better able to withstand battle damage to fuselage and wings, apparently. Know little about the Defiant. Don't really know much about the other two come to that. Colin will remember a visit to Duxford a few years ago, where a small group of Morgan owners assisted pushing a Seafire out onto the grass so the engineering team could do some engine tests after a recent rebuild. That really was a GRAND day out! Must hunt through the photos...

The Defiant or Boulton Paul Defiant was a bit of a mixed bag. It was at the cusp of the old RAF from WWI and the interim years. It had the old conservative design goals on a more modern platform which compromised its effectiveness. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulton_Paul_Defiant  It was modern following the blueprint of a single wing with a liquid cooled engine that quickly turned into the Hurricane and Spitfire. Yet it had that hangover of old thinking, a rear gunner and turret but no forward firing guns. The told theory of one flying/watching and one firing. It did not have the speed to engage in equal combat with the ME109 and so became a bit of a challenge for the squadrons equipped with it. As you say a pilot and rear gunner flying one of these needed greater bravery. It got moved to night use against the german bomber streams where it became less vulnerable. All airforces had these sort of planes. For the German air force the Stuka was almost a death sentence towards the end of the air war due to limited speed and armour.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

For those of you interested in the Battle of Britain there is a very interesting book entitled The Most Dangerous Enemy, A History of the Battle of Britain, by Stephen Bungay, Aurum Press. An eye opener, based on new archival evidence. That book is brilliant , its got all the actual facts rather than heresay ! There was something on the end of the news two nights ago about the Spitfire and Southampton which I caught the end of , did anyone see it ?

From what I'm reading at the moment in Peter Townsend's book the Defiant gave the 109's a big shock over Dunkirk as they hadn't seen a fighter with teeth facing backwards - if only the designers had put a couple of 20mm cannon in the wings it would have been lethal for longer !
