My son finishes his Phd this year & plan in April / May 2017 to drive route 66 with a diversion to the Grand Canyon.

Anyone got any advice on who to book with, what to do, what to avoid etc etc.

I hope to hire a Mustang convertible if possible& start in Chicago to get the flat bit over first. Or would you start somewhere further along?

I drove from Detroit in 1978 to San Diego in a Chev v8 , in those days it was 55mph limit. Great journey with lots of fuel stops and magnificent views !

Give serious thought to the pacific coast highway as an alternative. Route 66 on a Harley has long been a biker "must do" so there have been any number of magazine articles about it and a few short films too. The message from these is that route 66 is mostly sanitised and touristified with not that much of the original road left. Mostly its interstae

When I have done one way car rentals in the US, I have always been surprised at the fee the car rental company charge you for not returning the car to where you collected it from. I did a road trip around Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Salt Lake City, etc. I collected the car at Denver and returned it to Phoenix and the one way fee was $500, which is circa $1 per mile.

Maybe they have special arrangements for Route 66 as know one will drive both ways...

Yes one company doesn't charge that fee if you go towards Chicago.
I am looking into that cost!!

I too have heard that Route 66 is rather touristy.

I regularly do US road trips.

Two years ago we did Houston>Dallas>Memphis>Nashville>Bowling Green>Lynchburg>New Orleans>Houston. Highlights included Gas Monkey Garage (Dallas), Graceland, Corvette plant, Jack Daniels Distllery and New Orleans' French Quarter.

Last year we did the West Coast: San Fran>Mammoth Lakes>Yosemite>Las Vegas>Grand Canyon>Palm Springs>Los Angeles>Santa Barbara>Carmel>Santa Cruz>San Fran.

This year we are doing: Chicago>Detroit>Columbus(OH)>Indianoplis>Chicago. Highlights will include a NASCAR race and a country music festival.

The first one we had a Camaro SS convertible, second one we had a BMW 328i and this time we've booked a Chevrolet Tahoe or similar. It's fun to try different cars. On the Pacific Coast Highway we actually stood out in our BMW amongst the Mustangs and Camaros.

If you're dead set on doing something in a Mustang I recommend the West Coast rather than trying to do Route 66. I think you may be disappointed if you try that. Also one way car rental fees can be high!

If you have any specific road trip questions please ask. I recommend setting yourself up a spreadsheet....
