I am really feeling dumb. I am doing some touching up of the engine compartment and decided to replace the valve cover gasket and adjust the valves on my '70 4/4 Kent 1600 crossflow head. I cannot find the locking nut on the rocker arm adjusting screw. There is just a hollow threaded screw that goes onto the pushrod. What am I missing? I've adjusted valves on a lot of cars and there has always been some nut to secure the threaded adjuster in place. Is this threaded screw an interference type that requires a lot of force to move and then stays put. Seems unlikely but something must hold the screw in place. Any help would be appreciated.

On mine there is no locking nut. They are just tough to move!

Yes, they are 'self locking' .. They stay put by magic. Just make sure you have a good fitting spanner and watch knuckles!

Others above are totally correct, if you have a 'deep crank' ring spanner it will aid your work tremendously. As always 'Rule of 9' works but Ford at one time issued a TIB (Technical Information Bulletin) to say they should be adjusted TDC Firing on each cylinder in turn, to be honest and having used both methods there is no difference whatsoever whichever method you use and I have tried with the engine on a bench with a clock gauge on the crank and a DTI on the valves, as long as your on the back of the cam your fine.

I'd forgotten about the Ford self locking valve adjustment!

I'd forgotten about the Ford self locking valve adjustment! I've never understood how this is achieved, presumably it's something elegant, or is it just a case of having mismatched thread forms?

It's a mystery to me. You'd think the heat cycle would quickly loosen them off.

Thanks for the input. I guess I was right but it seems a bit bizarre to say the least. I'll give it a go. Apparently it has been like that for 45 years so it must work. It is an odd or clever design. I like the belt and suspenders approach with the lock nut but I guess I have no choice.
