Just been listening to the proposal to build this 18 mile long tunnel.
Cost would be £6Billion.
What do you Yorkshire and Lancs lads think??

My first thoughts are that I would love to have a blast through it in a Plus 8! No chance of a blast....speed limit will be enforced....hmmmm could stay in lower gear to get some revs...that's what happens in the tunnel in Cardiff Bay.

Would much prefer a very useful tunnel at £6 billion - rather than the BBC at £7.3 billion per annum - and even worse - the EU at £12 billion PER ANNUM NET!

Well....as long as there is light at the end of it :-) Have they indicated locations A and B are likely to be?...........we don't want to have too many Lancashire immigrants finding their way into Yorkshire!   (PS don't tell my missus I just said that...she's a Lancashire lass)

There are already three old rail tunnels at Woodhead. One is in use for the national grid. A new road tunnel is a waste of public money. There are already fast trains between Sheffield & Manchester. The old route should be reopened and re - electrified. It was one of the first overhead electrifications which started before WW2 by the LNER.

There used to be a perfectly good set of 3 rail tunnel, the Woodhead Tunnels, closed in the Beeching Era.
Now one carries high voltage national grid cables, the others are derelict not fit for use, so will be sealed.
So to build a descent road and rail line between Sheffield and Manchester will cost another £10b to £20b. I'd say worth every penny as most of the cost would go back into the economy.
