Hi. I've just removed the chrome bumpers from my Morgan as I want to refurbish the insides as they're going rusty. To do the job properly I'd like to remove the rear bumper mounting brackets but one of the nuts has rusted up causing the coach bolt to rotate. I've tried WD40 to free it up but without success. I cant get in with an angle grinder to cut off the nut. The only other thing I can think of is to purchase a Dremel but don't really want to spend the money if I don't have to. Anyone got any ideas? Phil

Thanks Pete. Would you say this is better than WD40? Almost anything is better than WD40 as a penetrating fluid: Plus-Gas, Liquid Wrench, even a 50-50 mix of diesel and paraffin. WD40 is great for cleaning and degreasing stuff, but for everything else it's pretty pants.

Try a nut splitter; alternatively a hacksaw or a hacksaw blade inseted into a blade handle so the the 'bow' doesn't impede access.
Reassemble anything and everything unless internal (e.g. engine, etc) with copperslip.

Thanks David. I hadn't considered a nut splitter. This may well be the best option as the coach bolt itself is turning and impossible to grip the domed end.

Phil, consider taking a hacksaw down the centreline of the thread and nut. You should be able to remove enough metal to enable you to split the nut with a hammer and cold chisel.

If you can get two nuts to lock together at the very tip of the coach bolt to hold the bolt tight you might be able to have a spanner onto them and another on the rusty nut and work the rusty nut back against the two locked nuts
