Like most us I'm sure, I really enjoy the attention we get and love returning the waves and flashes.
Problem is, I also hate "letting people down" if I fail to return their recognition in time, if at all. Quite often my kids or wife will say, "he waved, she waved, they waved" and then follow it with, "why didn't you wave back?". I do of course suggest that they too can respond but they all seem afflicted with a particular variety of English reserve meaning they don't want to draw further attention to themselves.
My primary focus is of course keeping us on the road, and safely with it. Eyes on the road as it were.
That said I hate the thought that some may be thinking, "miserable sod couldn't be bothered to wave back". They probably aren't, but the guilt lingers.
Is it just me?.....

The answer is to be the first to wave... That's ok if the oncoming car is an 'interesting' one..but if it's just an enthusiastic tin top owner, could mean you need to wave at everything just in case. Oh well most drivers think we are crazy anyway

I always wave - the sight of another Morgan is such a rare event, particularly when I'm actually driving mine!

See what your wife say's when you bring a young blonde home and she is standing outside your garage with you on a frosty December night wanting a ride.The silly woman chased me over 20 mile for a ride , did she get one of course what else do mog owners do but say " jump in . Is it just me?..... Yes, it is just you..!!! Wave like a banshee, even if you've passed each other. We drive these things for fun, you misery..!!

Steve, I think you badly missed the point, or perhaps I didn't make my point clearly enough.
Can't work out where you can come to the conclusion I'm a misery. I love waving and the fact that the three wheeler gets such positive attention. I don't want to be perceived by someone as a misery by involuntarily missing them waving and smiling.
I hope you get where I was going with the original post.

You don't wave in time & you feel guilty.

Arm in the air so even rear viewers see it.

I hope you get where I was going with the original post. We get the impression your just trying to get an excuse for not waving... I'm with Steve! You always have to wave and you have to raise a flag!  ------  :

Give me strength, read my post, I LOVE WAVING.
I feel guilty for not acknowledging those who do wave and I miss by mistake because I'm trying to keep my eye on the road and drive safely.
Can I make it any clearer. I regret trying to make what was supposed to be a positive post.

No not just you.....and I had the same feelings on motorcycles....though it was easier when driving abroad because you could either just lift your finger on your left hand to wave or alternatively take your left leg off the footpeg and straighten your leg. With oncoming vehicles being on your left it was easy, you cannot do the same finger wave in UK because it interferes with you throttle control.
Even then though there were people on certain marques that seemed to think that waving or acknowledging a fellow enthusiast was somehow below them. The less said about them the better!
Sometimes my mind is elsewhere when I am riding/driving or, like you, I am simply too busy concentrating on what I am doing, and I miss an oncoming wave....I feel guilty....but the guilt passes.....and seems to spur me on to ensure that I do not miss the next one.
So wave if you can....and don't worry if you can't.....it is not a crime!
