It is looking as if Port Talbot can be sold.
In the deal it would convert from Blast furnace / Boss production to arc furnaces melting scrap.
There would still likely be job losses but in reduced numbers, staff can be retrained at the buyers Newport plant..Alpha Steel.
It is looking as if Politicians are assisting as a third party and forms of grants/loans are possible.
I sincerely hope it goes ahead.
To simply stick to market forces blindly is not good.
I agree with auster re a strategic view of the industry and help to maintain it. Nationalisation? No.
That has too many interfering political decisions overriding commercial ones within the strategic scenario. Doing away with the blast furnaces and BOS plant is doing away with steel making. What will be left with arc furnaces is nothing other than recycling steel. Don't get me wrong, it is much better than a shutdown, but we should be fighting for full steel making capability to be retained. As far as Nationalisation is concerned I find it strange that the same people that decry Nationalisation for industry are fighting hard to keep the NHS from privatisation. Peter

As far as Nationalisation is concerned I find it strange that the same people that decry Nationalisation for industry are fighting hard to keep the NHS from privatisation. We might end up the same as America?

Tata says it may have found a way to save its South Wales steel plant, though the company gave no further indication of what this might be.
In unrelated news, Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover today announced a series of future models, starting with a special edition called the Range Rover Steel. The new top-of-the-range model swaps the standard aluminium body for one made of steel, set off by steel wheels and steel windows. The interior, which is described as ‘steely’, features a steel sunroof and heated steel seats.
Meanwhile, Jaguar has released the first details of its new X-traheavy saloon which ditches the company’s usual all-aluminium construction for a body made from what the company calls ‘enormous slabs of steel’. The car’s all-steel suspension system is coupled to radical steel tyres for handling which the company promises will be ‘anything but leaden’. Prices have yet to be announced but a Jaguar spokesman promised the car would be ‘a steal’.

As far as Nationalisation is concerned I find it strange that the same people that decry Nationalisation for industry are fighting hard to keep the NHS from privatisation. Although full nationalisation is probably not the right answer for industries which must operate in a competitive commercial environment, I see no reason why the government could not have a significant shareholding in a strategic industry in order to ensure it operates in the best long-term interests of the people of the UK. It seems bizarre to me that the core infrastructure (power, water, telecommunications etc) of our country has been sold off to foreign companies, and is now effectively outwith our control.

Better get used to it. Once the EU ratifies the TTIP elements of our Health Service will be the next to go. Not only that it will be much more difficult to reverse the trend as the treaty gives ever more power to corporate business, an EU staple. Really, and I always thought it was successive Conservative governments that sold electricity, gas, telecommunications, post office, railways, water, coastguards, privatised search and rescue, didn't know the EU had a hand in it???????????? The TTIP seems to me to be a very dangerous, illiberal and undesirable step, and one which I am deeply concerned about, but I don't see it as being an EU-driven thing - if the UK were to leave the EU, there would be no certainty that the TTIP would be abrogated.
As you say, it's supported by the Conservatives and given Labour's current disarray, I see no realistic alternative government in the UK for the foreseeable future.

More interesting data in the Guardian today about the supposed 'Green Penalty' being to blame for Port Talbot's woes by the anti-EU lobby. Far from being 'crippling green taxes' it emerges in research by the UK Energy Research Centre that actually the carbon taxes represent only around 1% of Port Talbot's operating costs, and furthermore thanks to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, Port Talbot received over £239m over the period 2008-2014. So the EU and its Green policies have been helping, not hindering Port Talbot. What's behind the issues at Port Talbot? The dumping of Chinese steel and the global demand reduction are the most important of course, but also their life has not been made easier by the UK's highly privatised energy industry.
