Is there an easy way to release a locked seatbelt mechanism?

I looked from the rear of the car, but the mechanism isn't easily accessible.

Tried unbolting the other end of the belt in the car in the hope of releasing it that way, but the buckle prevents it from going any further, and I don't have the tool to remove that from the belt.

I guess I have to access via the cabin by removing the seat backs - how do you do that?

Make sure you're absolutely level, then fiddle with the belt - allow it to retract if possible and do it slowly.

Patience is your friend here - stick with it , it will release .... eventually. I am aware of two other M3W's this has happened to and they all free up after a good bit of fiddling.

It's been two weeks, I've tried flat, inclined, everything.

There is no play left at all to fiddle with, and the "leave it alone and it'll fix itself"approach didnt work either - although I could persevere with that one for a bit longer wink

Random suggestions :

1) Tap the plastic seat belt reel cover , visible if you take the boot liner out , while gently tugging the belt ?

2) Get onto a steep hill as possible and try 1 again

Depending on how the reel is mounted and aligned flat and level vehicle may not be the best position to free it you may have to induce various angles in the vehicles three axis to get the reel at rest

Considering the effectiveness of the handbrake at holding the car, this is starting to sound like quite a dangerous exercise!

It's not the most fun thing to do, but you do get quite a bit of access to the belt mechanisms if you remove the boot cover, remove the four bolts that hold in place the top seatback panel, remove the top and bottom seatback panels and, finally, remove the lined aluminum panel (about 10 bolts on that one as it is connected to the prop shaft cover).

It's extreme, but if nothing else has worked, it might give you a better picture of what is going on.
