I have 1981 1600 crossflow. I alluded to this problem in my last post, but its getting worse.

My engine revs drop when the car is warm/hot and at idle. The car starts fine. And when driving she is OK. But when stopped in traffic, or like tonight just sat in the garage, the revs suddenly drop and she stalls.

Give her a minute and she will start but runs roughly. Give it some welly and she is OK higher up the rev range. But ill return to idle, and then die quite quickly.

The choke opens properly and I have not changed the settings other than take the heavy air filter of a couple of years ago. Valve clearances are fine and she has an electronic distributor. I also note that if at idle, the revs drop when the the lights or heater etc s turned on.

Any ideas?

Is it charging OK? Battery OK?

The revs dropping when the alternator loads with electrical accessories is normal. If that's a problem then tweak the idle up slightly.
I'm not too familiar with carbs that are not SU's, but fixed jet carbs often have an idle jet, which may have become partially blocked. Check your manual and see if there's an idle jet and where it is. Often they can be screwed out and blown through. If you have an in line fuel filter, fit a new one.

That's the simple place to start. It could be fuel vapourisation or an intermittent electrical fault but start with the basics!

See this site - two idle jets on this carb:

Cheers gents. The battery is holding 13.5 volts and the ammeter/volt meter swings to about 14 volts when running.

I'd plump for a fuel issue..

Pump working all the time? Clogged filter..?

Old fuel..?

Dirt in carb (as per Dave's post) I was going to say sh*t in carb, but that's an old joke..

As described - fuel issue, not electrical.

That car probably has a Webber DGAV. While the symptoms are not exactly right, a good starting point would be to blow every hole out with an air line. I was lucky years ago when mine acted up as I worked somewhere with an air line. Took carb off and with the air line, blew every passage out. Fixed the problem.

Is your the model with an automatic choke? The one I had was a DGV (yes, the A does stand for automatic) and the automated choke was not the best, although Fords attempt on the VV carb was utterly hopeless and many people at the time used to fit Webbers as they were so much better.

When it peters out, just check fuel supply TO the carb before you start pulling jets etc out. Tank pick up or filter could be playing up, had it before.

A fuel flow restriction, ie a partially blocked filter etc usually leads to a car that starts just fine, cruses reasonably but dies shortly after you ask it for some power.

But worth checking as one should always check the quick and easy before pulling things apart. Some garages could do with learning that lesson too!

The Weber 32/36 gets junk in it. Martyn suggested blowing it out. Good idea IMO. Have used this carb on several Morgans and a Subaru Brat. Doesn't like dirt.
