Also worth checking that the wire to the anti run on valve has not fallen off.

If there's an anti run on valve it might benefit from a squirt of WD 40 and a few on and offs. That's how I used to improve sealing on Metros.

Just to bring an update. Yesterday she would not start at all. Nothing. If I squirted some easy start into the carb she would run on that, but wouldn't draw, or ignite the petrol. Pump was fine, and there must have been a spark to get the easystart burning.
As if by magic a carb reconditioning set arrived in the post and I took the carb of and cleaned it. I replaced as many seals and o rings as possible.
Still nothing, by which point my battery had run out of juice.

I charged the battery last night and she started easily this morning!!! I also double cleaned the idle circuit just before this and had actually forgotten to put the idle adjust screw back in (this was at 0700 this morning which explains a lot). I have nit taken her for a spin yet, due to inclement weather, but will report back after that.
I think a new battery and a new coil will be bought just in case its a battery or coil issue. I have read duff coils give hard starting and erratic running when hot, which sort of matches my symptoms a degree.

Good luck Matt. At least it is a bit easier dealing with carbs and coils rather than fuel injectors and ECUs!

Thanks Gents. I took her for a spin today and she was fine. However, there is a distinct smell of fuel so I may have to look at the float height and needle etc. I replaced the old viton tipped one with the new all metal one. Not sure that was a step forward.

I had something very similar about 10 years ago, turned out to a crack in the distributor cap. Near invisible when cold but once the engine had warmed up it opened up! Might be worth checking!

The smell of fuel may be the accelerator pump diaphragm failing - on my 1972 4/4 (with a Weber DGV), you could see a small drop of petrol leaking when a helper pressed the accelerator pedal. New diaphragm comes with the genuine Weber/Webcon service kits

Cheers

Arwyn
