If you have a decent data tariff and smartphone I would use Waze. Waze were purchased by Google some time back so now a lot of their function is actually built into GoogleMaps. I love Apple but cannot recommend Apple Maps sadly !

If you don't want to use your data tariff you can get an app which has full maps on board such as Navmii so can run standalone. Not as clever as Waze but just as good as most stand alone devices and easier to keep to up date free of charge.

The nice thing about phones is that the cost and availability of car mounts is much greater. Also the range of apps gives you more choice on smartphones. One thing to carry and charge, lots of uses outside of the map (which pub, best price, petrol station in distant places, SOS etc)

If you are worried about the battery life on a long run then get one of the smaller battery packs that give it a constant charge and can be recharged from any USB charger at the destination. A very cogent point John, a phone signal down here is very iffy in it's coverage.

But a near vertical look at one of the numerous satellites is always available.
I bought a Tomtom about 5 years ago and provided you have it set up for the type of routing you want its o.k. and about £80.

Probably totally wrong on this but I don't think you need a phone signal for a satnav app like co-pilot - just a GPS signal?

I don't have an iPhone so don't know but if that's the case it would be ideal for navigating.

I kind of assumed you needed the internet to drive the app.

Yes Co-Pilot is fine as you fully download the maps onto your device. Other require a phone signal,to,download maps as you drive.

iPhone & Android have built in GPS as well as sensitive motion sensors.

Some of the apps use GPS only and can run in flight mode which means NO phone signal needed. You pre-load the Maps onto the device within the application so permitting signal free service.

Google also works in off-line mode but this requires some technical skills so if you are worried I would advise the off line maps tools which have the maps built into the App.

I don't mean that to provoke an argument, just to let people realise that it does not always need the signal like Google.

Thanks for the information on these phones and navigation this site is a great Open University .

Things are slowly improving in the wilds of rural South Wiltshire... I can now get a 3G signal from Vodafone at home. But using WAZE outside urban areas is slow, slow so although it is impressive I don't use it.

I prefer a good navigator next to me who has an inbuilt sense of direction and who uses paper maps...
Somehow more "Morgan".

But the person normally in that seat has all the navigation skills of a dead parrot. So I rely on TomTom.
