I climbed into the car today to discover the rear view mirror on the floor, the adhesive sticking the plastic bracket to the windscreen has failed.

Any tips on:

1)how to firstly remove the excess glue from the screen so that I have a good flat surface onto which I can glue a replacement
2)what glue to use to re-stick the bracket or alternatively where to get a new bracket incorporating a sticky pad?

The rear view mirror is a Williams small metal type that utilised the standard windscreen bracket.

Thanks
Roger

They all do that Roger!
Seriously I got mine from uncle Melvyn, cleaner, pad and adhesive if I remember correctly. Nail varnish remover will probably remove the old adhesive.
Tried a couple of aftermarket pads but they all failed when the sun came out!

You could try very careful use of a spot of cellulose thinners to soften the original glue, then scrape it off.
For sticking it back on, the best thing I've found is to nip into your local Ford dealer and ask for the double-sided pads they use for the rear-view mirrors in Fiestas and the like.
You'll just have to cut around the pads to get the right shape for your mirror, but it's a very simple job, and they're pretty cheap, too. ( Get a couple just in case...)
And make sure your screen is really clean.
Good luck.

A new trapezoid Stanley blade used with caution will remove it, put some insulating tape on the back of the blade to make it kinder on your fingers.

Mine kept coming off repeatedly until I was advised to clean the glass with acetone prior to sticking it back. I'd always cleaned the old glue and used the small wipe, but the impregnated wipe is not enough. Been stuck for years since smile

Had the same problem, 1,5 year ago in my first summer. Car was only 4 month old and I had changed the factory mirror to the
chrome version.
I made a short drive to our local repair shop for windscreens (in Germany it's called Carglass) and asked there for a repair pad.
They gave me one pad for free and it was large enough to split it for a second try. But wasn't necessary, the first try works perfect
until today and we had in last summer temperatures up to 40°C. The pad is only a foam with doublesided glew strips on it.

So this was the cheapest solution ;-)

So maybe you could get them also in UK. And if I could remember right the pads where delivered by Ford.

Thanks for all the helpful advise. Once I've raided the bathroom cabinet and 'spirited' away the acetone, I'll pop into a local garage and get some of the adhesive pads and then hopefully the car will be ready for the weekend!

My interior mirror dropped off 4 weeks after the car was delivered, but as it was booked into Berrybrook for its' first service, they glued it back on with fiendish 2 part expoxy, they said it will never move again...............
