I have a '70 4/4 with the Kent crossflow engine. What type and manufacturer of transmission would have gone into this car? The reason for asking is that the bell shaped housing that the shift lever goes through is worn in the opening causing very sloppy shifts. I'd like to replace it so I can have a bit more precise feel when shifting. It appears as if the hole should be about 1/2 inch in diameter but is now about 3/4 inch in size. I also think that this is part of the lever action of the shifter and acts as a fulcrum point to engage various gears. I guess the real question is asked to find out if the part is available from someone or some company. I suppose I could weld it up but it slides inside of the keeper dome and I'm afraid I would warp it with the heat.

Probably a Ford T-9. Might try Morgan Spares and a Lotus Parts and Kit Car builders. Suspect it will be easier to find a rebuilt T-9 rather than parts. Just My guess. "Dave Bean Engineering" in California may be a help.
Probably one of these. Or the single rail version of the same gearbox. Not quite as good but still a good box. Both have near ideal ratios for that engine, red line it in first, change to second and the revs hit the torque peak and the gaps get smaller as you go up the box.

Thanks Martyn. I thought all those 4 cyl Ford transmissions were a T-9.
Marcus, make sure this is the problem before you spend a lot of time fixing it. I have a 81 Crossflow (80K miles) and experienced some thing similar. It was the plastic ball on the end of shifter, which had been eaten away. I still dont know why?
I had to replace this ball before I got good shifts again. I have pics if you want them. Send me an email address. series1@cfl.rr.com

Mark, I took the assembly apart and the problem appears to be in the spring seat retainer area. The knob seems to be okay. As much as I want to solve the problem, I really want to know the tranny type so that if I need to make other repairs in the future, I have the right type of box style. As near as I can tell, the tranny makers just supply the gearbox itself. The shift lever assembly seems to be sort of an afterthought and doesn't show up as a part on any drawings that I can find with part numbers. I'm certain that the part is available, I just don't know the part number and from whom to get it.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures or engineering drawings of this transmission so I can't help with part numbers. I had to go to www.davebean.com/ in California to find a replacement. They may be able to help.

I was just thinking about the problem. Perhaps I should be asking the forum why the gear lever has so much slop instead of just assuming what the problem is. My knowledge of Morgan gearboxes is very limited and perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions as to what I believe is the problem. Anyone have any ideas other than what I originally thought?
