Interesting. I guess I should've assumed a decade makes a difference. Sorry.
FYI, I will be in Williamsburg on Sept 17-18, staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. On a Morgan Pub Crawl through VA and MD. Maybe we'll see you.

Mark B. You were correct! I removed the shifter lever and found that I had the same problem as you had. Mine is all eaten away. I started to examine it close and found that here were a lot of non-metallic particles in the lever area and sure enough, about 25% of the plastic ball seat was gone. Now to identify the part and find one!

That looks like it's off a Capri. I had exactly the same problem as you about 30 years ago.

Try UK Ford Part number 6078141 and is described as "Lever-Gearshift" and it is
intended to fit Ford P100 and Mk2 Escort
It will need modifying though (reducing in height!)

I found the part at Dave Bean Engineering in California. It's on the way and I'll be good to go in a couple of days. Interestingly, Ken at Dave Bean had this part in stock and says he sells a lot of them! I guess I'm good for another 45 years! He also stated that the gear box is a Ford product and is simply known as a Cortina GT box and was used from '68 to '70.

I also have a 1970 4/4 with the 1600GT engine . My gear shift is sloppy too , but it still functions well . I tried to find out which gearbox I had, but that has proved difficult. According to the Ford Cortina MK 11 hand book "the gearbox fitted to all models is basically the same, but the main difference is in the selector mechanism (three selector rods on earlier models and one on later ones) The one selector rod model was used on all models (Cortinas) from 1968 , so it's likely that your car has that . Mind you it is a Morgan ....... The only way to know which box you have it to uncover it and look .It does not seem to be possible to be sure otherwise. If there is a separate tube on top of the rear extension of the box, that contains the one selector rod and thus indicates the model . If the selector rods are inside the rear extension, ie no separate tube on top the you have the three rod box . The Ford Cortina Mk 11 owner's workshop manual has exploded views of both types. I likely need to do the same repair as you ....when I get around to it ....Terry

I'll try to remember to let you know how the part works out and the hopefully improved shift pattern with no slop. I guess I should try to find a Cortina handbook for future reference. Now you have me concerned but I have to rely on Bean Engineering. They were quite confident that I had a single rod selector and your comments seem to verify that. Time will tell.

Marcus, see if you can find a copy of "Morgan Four Owners Workshop Manual" It allegedly covers 4 cylinder Morgans to 1981, however not FIAT or CVH engines.
The reprint by Brooklands Books their number OWM796m ISBN 1-870642-63-5 (that is an old ISBN number but should still find the book with a Google search...).
