Following a test drive at the Allon White open day I am seriously considering upgrading my Plus 4 for a Roadster. Been on my mind for a while and heart says now even if head has some serious reservations. Looking at the options list can any Roadster owners comment on whether or not Aircon or the Sports Exhaust make sense. I never had a moment where I wished for Aircon in my Plus 4 (was surprised it is an option - but do not want to spec a car that is difficult to sell). The sport exhaust on the the other hand is appealing - but I don't see many cars having this option. Any reason why not ?

I wouldn't bother about aircon.
I don't know about the latest Sports Exhaust but the one on my S1 Roadster was intolerably loud with a deep drone at 70. I was lucky in having the original system so that went back on the second day of ownership.

Thanks Dave. Your comment on the exhaust is my fear. I like the noise of a V6 but you can have too much of a good thing - perhaps better to start with the standard one.

My Roadster 100 had a sports exhaust - loud, especially early morning for neighbours - and when I was travelling through built up areas when it was very loud. Canyon echo effect.

Current Roadster has regular exhausts which are loud enough for me.

Wouldn't bother with aircon either.

For the price of a new Roadster you can have a well sorted, late Aero or even an early Aero based Plus 8.

Agree 100% about avoiding the sports exhaust, but on the Plus 8 the Aircon makes a big difference...it keeps the footwells cool and hood up it is a powerful de-mister.

Sound is the reason I've not upgraded to any of the sports exhaust systems be they MMC, Librands, or RPI. Until I can test these at highway speeds I won't be doing an upgrade. As for other options to consider... definitely the walnut (or other wood) dash, definitely wire wheels. I would not bother with mohair hood (unless you drive with hood up a lot) but do consider mohair stored hood cover and or tonneau. I modified my hood after delivery with a zip out rear window for traveling on very hot days. As for aircon, I have it on my 2010 but then we drive in Australia in temps in high 30's, low 40's! It is moderately effective.

My 3.7 Roadster had sports exhaust from Williams, sounded great, fine with roof down, could become a little wearing on long runs with roof up. Make sure car comes with the MBE ECU, if not it will have a rev hang above 3.5k revs which is pretty unpleasant and spoils the drive IMHO. There are several threads on this on TM. If your going to use it in colder weather heated seats are worth considering, really make a comfort difference.

On the A/C front. I had this in my 3.7 Roadster. In truth, it's not very effective. Yes it pumps out cooler air (even when the knob inside the engine bay on the A/C unit is turned on full) but in my opinion not worth considering unless you are living where it's hot - so not Germany, or the UK - though today could be good!

On the Plus 8 (Aero) it's completely different. Works very well. Nice cold air pumped. Don't use the A/C that much, but when I do I'm glad it's fitted.

Completely agree on headed seats. Had them on the 3.7, and the Speedster. Really good. Two setting: hot and very hot. Well worth it. Use them a lot for night blats.

Standard exhaust & no air con is fine on my S1

I would say find one that has an insulated cockpit if you are after aircon as they are toasty beasties the heat is welcome in the deeps of winter but on warm days the transmission tunnel and side pipes make for a warm car, the aircon would be handy to deal with cabin heat but inneficient if the car is adding to the heat.

Peter J Dyna-matted his S2 Roadster to good effect, not gotten around to it on mine but I will one day.

I have neighbours and I do shift work so no noise generators on my cars, the standard box are noisy enough when you unleash the V6 Banshie howl...............
