A good TMer gave me an early nod that an ECU update was going to be available for GDI Plus 4's.

So I have had mine done and can say that the 'issue' of high revs on cold start is still an issue but the general running is improved. It has leaned the lower rev ranges so the car isn't so sooty and I now have a nice burble from the exhaust on overrun.. No banging and popping but just a burble. It feels cleaner and crisper at 'normal' revs and I don't have the muck dribbling out the tailpipe.. Probably the MPG will be better too, So overall it's worth it.

Steve, How, where and how much?? Your symptoms sound exactly like mine right down to the sooty exhaust.
I'm not bothered about the banging exhaust but I would like better m.p.g. I'm sure that the GDI engine burns more fuel than my two previous Duratec's, I am very light footed and am only getting around 26mpg as opposed to close on 40mpg for the previous two.

Here for a good time not a long time!!

Interesting, my December 2014 +4 GDI has never had high revs on cold start, sometimes does well over 40mpg even with "progressive" driving at times. Last year over the Pyrenees to the med it averaged 38mpg. Last Sunday did a run out with a Caterham lookalike through Wales, over the "hellfire pass" from Dinas to Bala, then back via Llangynog and curry in Shrewsbury. Tankful to tankfull 41mpg. Great driving route - even the bikers we driving reasonably slowly. Perfect weather.

Yes, interesting. My Sept 2014 GDI appears to have no issues with high revs on start and is also very economical. Same experience as WOX9. I'd be interested to know more about the ECU upgrade and what it's supposed to achieve.

Check the Techniques page in this month's Miscellany - I think I saw it there.

Yep - back page:
"With the factory diagnostic equipment we are able to offer the latest ECU flash for the +4GDI. This removes the high revs on first start, gives an improvement on MPG and can be carried out when you have your car serviced.
We are also able to carry out an ECU emissions reflash for the +4 SuperSports".

Very interesting Steve.

Mine has a short revs "spurt" on starting when cold and a pop now and again when running (which I quite like).

Acceleration however doesn't seem to be all it can be. Has the update improved that at all?

Also, was it done at the dealer?

Cheers

Doesn't a sooty exhaust mean the cat isn't getting hot enough?

The Duratec exhaust is absolutely clean.
