Pinion tooth engagement was adjusted first with shims to ensure its teeth spanned the full depth of those on the crownwheel. Engineers blue was then applied to the pinion teeth and the box assembled complete with gaskets, and various crownwheel shims tried until a centrally placed contact patch was found on the latters teeth following turning of the pinion shaft by hand.

I see no reason why the crownwheel and pinion engagement of the Quaife box couldn't be checked in a similar manner, although I accept that access to the full range of shims may be an issue.

Richard,
That's my opinion too, that's why I asked to Quaife !!
If someone can adjust this bevel boxes it need to be Quaife.
But even if you want to pay for it they send you away. A bit strange to me.

To Michael H
We already upgraded our rear sprockets with the ones from Super Max (on your advice) but that didn't bring the big difference in noise level.
I'm having also as less possible tension on the drive belt

And we both already riding with Red Line Heavy Duty Shockproof Oil
(see my post of the leaking BB)

How is it strange that a supplier would turn you away. Of course they would...this no different than any other company. Can you imagine calling up the microchip supplier for Apple phones and asking them to work on the chip for you to increase performance or lessen heat when using heavy processing?

Morgan is the money funnel and going around behind their back and working with customers directly would no doubt be a heavy breach of contract. You are far more likely to find a separate company who can help you create a solution.

As it is, the M3W is basically a kit car which Morgan assembles in house, if all the suppliers let customers buy directly from them...people would just cut Morgan out and piece the car together themselves. Bad business.

Adding to Richard's process on his MG, if you already have a noisy BB, shimming after the fact will probably not help much if at all.

As Richard said, he started with a matched set of gears. Getting a new set of gears from Quaife will not happen and I doubt that MMC even stocks repair parts for the BB other than new assemblies.

I could see someone with Richards expertise, if he had availability to shims, a new M3W BB could be torn down and setup right and you may eliminate the dreaded whine.

As has been stated on the forum, the manual states the BB will make noise at the beginning, but becomes less after 1k miles. If any of us bought a new car that we were told to just wait 1k miles and your new sedan "should" become less noisy. I think we'd all take a hike away from that manufacturer in a heart beat.

As I've been told here in the past, I have no skin in the game, but I can relate. I have owned a few new Harleys and they too have their quirks. It's oh so common to voice a complaint to the dealership service department just to be told, "that's normal, they all do that"... But I'm still buying Harleys and seem to just brush off the quirks as "normal".

You can complain directly to Harley via their direct customer service line, but usually they just say they've never heard of your problem; it must be just your bike. This can go on for several years with their head in the sand. Then a couple years later on the next new model year, SURPRISE, they've changed their bike to eliminate the problem that they never admitted to in the first place.

It might be worth contacting the guys at Garage56. I know from their facebook page that they've been investigating this issue with the help of a F1 gearbox shop and it certainly sounds as if they're determined to get to the bottom of it!

In the meantime, 'keep the faith'! My 2012 bevel box is silent below 50mph and not obtrusive above that speed. So quietness IS possible!

Laurens, maybe try contacting Terence Goad at Garage 56. They had a bevel box in pieces a few months ago with a view to coming up with a marketable solution to the problem of noisy bevel gearboxes. I haven't heard anything from him and I asked him to let me know if they fixed it. "Bwitched" did a detailed write up about his bevel box rebuild in April 2015 on TM and managed a quite BB with correct tolerances.

As you might expect the bevel box was discussed at the recent M3W focus group.

I don't want to pre-empt the outcome of the recent focus groups (which will be sometime after the Aero group focus group next month) but feel it worth letting you all know that MMC are not ignoring the BB issue.

MMC have been working together with Quaife to investigate the cause and have so far concluded it is most likely down to a very small variations (well within production tolerances) on the gears - possibly as small as a couple of microns on some gear teeth. This would explain why some are quiet then noisy or visa versa and also how some respond to changing oil and some don't.

It also accounts for the comments about needing to keep changing noisy boxes until you luck into a quiet one.

The MMC NVH kit may be ugly but it does apparently stop the noise - anyone on here with the NVH kit able to comment?

MMC have been working on the known M3W issues including exhausts, bevel boxes (and previously steering, chassis and compensators) without shouting about it. At the focus group we did suggest that they could share more of this info with owners.

The Quaife responses look like they are quite correctly protecting their client confidentiality and so they cannot comment directly.

I have had the NVH fitted since 500 miles from new.

As mentioned recently I have gone through 2 boxes for oil leak reasons.
While they have certainly not been silent , I would not say the current box "screams" as others have described or is unacceptable from a noise point of view.
I have a standard Morgan steel pulley fitted. So belt noise is acceptable now ( after 5K miles ) - previously on an ally pulley it sounded like an old washing machine on its last legs after 1K miles which it certainly does not now.

As I mentioned on another thread the repeated oil leaking issue is the killer issue for me as it smacks of incompetent design / manufacture / installation and will affect long term use of the car.

If I thought it could be made even quieter/more resilient by some means I would willingly shell out some cash , because I like the car so much.

Am I right saying Garage56 were looking at the bevel box at one point ?

I seem to remember reading on here when all the "upgrades" were floating out to the masses that a few had added the NVH upgrade to their early M3W's without much improvement.

Is the NVH part of all new M3W's? If so, then it's not solved the problem or MMC would not still be investigating this with Quaife.

I'm reading on new M3W's that the noise is there, like on Ken's new ride, but has seemed to diminished after the 1k mile mark, but still there to some degree.

It may be that with a trapezoidal belt every problem is resolved, except the sliding problems of the belt, in this case Quaife can not do anything.
It seems that some at Polaris customer complained about the noise of the transmission.
This can be annoying in some cases, especially when a CRS biker shouts at me when I ride 120km speed is limited to 70km.

Yep...1,500 miles on my 2016 and the noise has greatly diminished. It's only above 50MPH now and much quieter even above that.
