My wife had an interesting one earlier this week, which is common.
She had shares in a UK company that went into administration in 2011 (and never came out).

Someone called from the US saying that they had a client who wanted to buy up enough shares so that they could gain a conrtolling interest in the company.
"Due to the timescale we can't write to you, so can I have your email address so that I can send you a document to purchase your shares?".

Er, like no.

Someone in India asks regularly to buy my shares in several companies privately!

I've had the Microsoft Windows call, told him I wasn't interested in double glazing he put the phone down on me, how rude.

A few years ago I had a call from a very taljative chap urging me to sell some shares I had and reinvest in his company's pirtfolio.
After letting him ramble on I told him to send details by pist.
Nothing arrived.
A year later the same chap tried again, I recognised his vouce and sales patter.
I put the phone on speaker and went to make coffee.
After a while I heard him querying if I was still there.
Yes I replied, just been out to make coffee.
Silence then he hung up.
No more from him after that.
Last year a woman called re PPI.
Insistant I was owed money " according to their records".
I asked what info did she have and how was it obtained.
She started getting shirty so I just told her to **** off and scam someone else.
Seemed to work. She hung up.

I have most of my friends in my directory. If the ring tone does not show a name I no longer answer it. On your mobile you can also set a block on numbers that pester you so they cannot dial you again in the future.

I get a lot of calls from these various people too. I hate them. As someone who worked from home for about 20 years until recently, the interruptions alone have cost me dearly.

Remember, they are all criminals. I have been on the list for none of those calls for years.

On three occasions I have shown interest in solar panels (which I don't really want). I have let them ring me back and discussed all about it. I have consented to their local rep coming to see me - and I'm only usually available at weekends. Each time I have kept the spiv who has turned up talking for a while before explaining that the only reason he is here is because I wanted to waste his time, like his firm has wasted mine. The solar panel calls are decreasing.

For most other calls, if I haven't the time to play them along and if they ask for me by my surname, I say 'which one'. They ask for me and I pause a bit. Then, slowly in a sombre voice, I say 'I'm his son John and I'm sorry to tell you he died yesterday.' They apologise and discontinue the call. Makes their day.

When it is the Microsoft scam I have worse lines that I use with these thieves, but I won't describe them here.

Our Government could stop a lot of them when they are UK based, by making the person doing the call liable for their actions. Wouldn't cover everything, but could be a useful deterrent. It would also get round the business of UK offending companies not paying fines, going bust and starting up again. If the directors were liable for incitement to commit a crime, and the call makers were liable for the calls they made, it would soon change things. We have had a sequence of governments without the bottle to do anything about it.

I cannot, however, think of any politicians strong enough to do what it requires.

Get the blighters and do to them whatever it takes.

ME....... Can I take your credit card details
CALLER..... Credit card detail !! why ?
ME....... Well I have to charge you for speaking to me
CALLER.... l.o.l. Charge !!
ME...... Yes, someone is paying you for talking, so someone has to pay me to talk back.... Now those card details please.

When they ring my first question is to ask them if they are looking to book accommodation, which surprises them, so they usually say that they want to talk to me about selling energy, blah, blah blah! I then say I'm sorry but you have rung on the accommodation hotline and I'd be happy to take your booking otherwise call on our other number - except, there isn't one.
