I always raise my left hand to acknowledge other drivers as in many tin tips the a frame blocks the signal

Interesting comment about the full arm salute in the Outer Hebrides.
On Mull In the inner Hebrides its a one digit acknowledgment known as the Mull Finger, if you get a wave, its a tourist. It could be that Mull is a bit nearer Ireland?

Two fun observations we have of the 'appropriate hand signal by way of appreciation'.....in Ireland last year driving the full extent of the West and South coasts we noticed the 'appropriate signal' was an ever so slight lifting of the finger off the steering wheel as in a sort of flick upwards, you could miss it if one wasn't watching for it, which we were after the first few days, but appreciation it was. I've just read about this in "McCarthy's Bar" (travelogue by Pete McCarthy). quote- 'At least, I think it's in acknowledgement. If it's 'Sit on this, ya English fecker,' then I have to say it's done with great charm.'

It's the Grockles from the Big City visiting the Wild West(country) - most of them still have the polystyrene wrapping on their reverse gear.

It's the Grockles from the Big City visiting the Wild West(country) - most of them still have the polystyrene wrapping on their reverse gear. One tried to get a farming friend to reverse a 4 wheel (as in two axles with the front axle steering) trailer because they did not want to reverse their car. It is possible to reverse them, just not easy. Common sense eventually prevailed.

I've never forgotten somebody who claimed a neck problem meant they could not reverse - and would not let my mate drive their car back the 20 or less yards in a straight line. I had to reverse a twisty 400 yards in the dark. Would have been impossible but for the same mate wielding my plug in inspection lamp.
.
If I got a muppet like that when driving the three wheeler (no reverse), it would be a case of turn the engine off and pretend to go to sleep.

In 1970, while visiting my Great Aunt at her farm in Co Limerick,we were flagged down in the middle of nowhere by two old Biddys standing by their car at the side of the road. One of them asked my Dad "Excuse me Sorr, but would ya moind turning de car around for us ? My sister & I droive, but we don't back".

When I learned to drive many decades ago in the Pennines & Lake District I was taught to say "Thank you" by holding up a hand when someone had given way for me. I was also taught to give way to those coming uphill even if I had right of way.
I very often give way to others on rural and suburban roads, if it is safe to do so, even if I have right of way - it seems to be common courtesy. However over the past few years the number of drivers who just drive on without raising a hand to acknowledge that I have given way seems to be getting rarer - especially amongs female drivers. Perhaps folks these days are too scared to let go of the wheel for an instant to say thank you - but they could at least smile instead of looking firmly ahead. Methinks that courtesy to other road users needs to be an integral part of the learning process and the driving test. I shall continue to raise my hand to those who give way for me and even break my face into a smile.
Rant over. What think you out there. At a guess you are in your 50s, 60s. What you describe is exactly my experience too, with drivers less willing to give way and consider each other. But it isnt just driving is it? For example at the gym in the swimming pool, I often find mother, father and offspring standing in the middle of the bit where you can swim lengths just messing about. Not prepared to move to the side. They have their rights. And when did young people stop standing up to let the old and females sit down on a bus?
