Hi, It looks like my catalytic converter has failed on my 1995 4/4 (1.8 Zetec engine). Thinking about my exhaust system for the first time it seems a bit of a hotch potch and I am not sure which bits are original. There is a twin pipe from the manifold to the cat with the words Mex 1300 written on it. The cat is in a mild steel case. The silencer is stainless and exhausts out of the passenger side in front of the rear wheel. The silencer seems to be a retro fit but any views on the twin pipe from the manifold would be gratefully received. HOWEVER my real question is where to get a new cat. A major Morgan supplier has them for well over £800 inc vat. However another site ( http://www.cats2u.co.uk/35850/Catalytic-Converter/MORGAN/4/4/1.8) charges £143. In the latter case one of the cat connections is different from the unit fitted to my car. Anyone have any experience of cat suppliers they can recommend. Many thanks.

I have replaced two cats on my +8, at around 42k and 50k.
The first place I looked was the racing guys who ditch the cats for better performance and the first time I was successful , but for the second one I bought one from a supplier similar to the above, but again it needed both ends modified by cutting my old ones off and re-welding onto the new unit. I was concerned about the extreme heat of welding affecting the honeycomb structure but the welder assured me the result would be fine , and it was.
Sorry that I can't identify the supplier from memory but will post if I find the paperwork.

I had the cat on my +4 welded up at the rear fitting where it split. It happily passed the MOT.
Not sure what Librands would charge you but I remember Ann Miller quoting c £800, so the 1/2 hr labour to weld it up made sense.

The link you posted was where i bought mine from and BM90963 fits T16 and Plus 8 3.9 also. I refused to pay £600 (as it was then) even if it doesn't last as long the price difference is daft. Its got to be cheaper to amend the pipework. Try Harpers, there may be a link pipe involved?

Many thanks for all the info. I have purchased a cat from a non-Morgan source and have sorted a welding company to modify the outlet flange.

Hi Flyfisher, the cat is the same length and fitting as the Morgan standard cat, but some cars require an extension pipe. These are available from Harpers. Best to check if there is already an extension fitted or not.
The Cat length is 32cm measured at the outer end of each flange.
The connecting pipes are 4.5cm.internal dia.
Female at one, Male at the other and they are offset.
The flanges are 3 bolt at 6.5cm. centres
The cat is Stainless steel.

Hi,
I have done quite a bit of digging since my first post as the discrepancy between prices seemed inordinately large, even for Morgans. However there is some explanation in that the cat from Librands (£432)is for a sports cat whereas the other prices (from £143) are all for standard units. The question now is whether the power increase is worth the around £250 increase in cost.
Anyone any views on what the power increase would be. I suspect a very small percentage.
