Hi all, got a petrol smell in the boot on my S1. Anyone know if this is a common problem and if so where to look to fix it?

Thanks all!

Hello Jappo

A mate's S1 recently went to the factory for a major service. All his fuel lines were replaced and he was told they were degrading from inside out. He was charged but is going to contest since you shouldn't have to replace fuel lines on a car after just 7 years.

On my S1 when I purchased I also had some smells in the boot, but after various tightening up of connections etc it seems to have gone.

Cheers

I had some petrol smells too, inside the interior & boot, but they disappeared after the mayor service last month.

Can't say I've heard of this one before; however, perhaps a few more S1 owners can comment on it?

I had engine oil/petrol smells when using the A/C on my S2 when I first got it. I was told that the insulation around the air intake on the top never seals well.

On a trip to Malvern I bought some extra sealant and placed a double height layer around the intake and this made a great difference to the interior smell.

I will get some pictures and post them to try and explain my ramblings.

Sorry I cannot comment on the boot smell, nothing in mine.

Could what you suggest above be the cause of the smell of fumes that I get under hard acceleration in the upper rev band (from 5K-6K)?

I was not getting "neat petrol" but I was getting a strong general engine oil/petrol smell from the air vents. It was more pronounced when hot and the use of A/Con did not make any difference.

I cleaned the old sponge remains off the top of the air box just in front of the windscreen under the bonnet using white spirit and a knife and then applied the double height layer kindly provided by the factory. This sealed the unit up against the underside of the bonnet, leaving water drainage at the front, and it was significantly changed.

I think the natural degradation of this foam material on the car from new means that my low milage 05 car was about right for replacement so it would be interesting to compare yours for reference.

I will get that picture I mentioned above for reference.
