Think you may be right about that, Peter. Those of you who use the A34 will know there were bridge repair works at Didcot last year. The average speed cameras were set at 50, then reduced for a half mile stretch to 40. I got a ticket in my Plus8 at 45 average (having reduced from 50 to 40 a bit late!) and when i checked, i was told that at 44 i would not have registered. On a relative basis, that equates to just over 56 in the 50 zone. And i did enjoy the speed awareness course!

Yes they transfer easily. But a second option is to use one of those lithium battery jump start packs which can also be use to charge phones and feed things like dash cams. I haven't tried mine for this purpose yet but it would be easier than routing the wire under the dash.

That's interesting, the usual view is that speed cameras are set to trigger at +10% +2 mph, so 35 in a 30 limit, 46 in a 40, 57 in a 50 and so on.

It's worth knowing that average speed zones are set lower than this - and reassuring to know they aren't set at bang on the limit!

Given that the things are dirt cheap these days, it's probably easier to get one for each vehicle and leave it permanently plumbed in.

The speed gantries on the M1 which now stretch from the M18 junction south, beyond the A38 to J25 are "active", even when no limit is displayed.
Having travelled that way more than normal recently I've seen them flash when the traffic flow is normal high density. Not all gantries have the cameras, and they can be spotted by looking to the extreme left as you approach - there are two small grey boxes cantilevered out from the main structure. On one occasion there were six flashes on the opposite carriageway, and the speed of lane 3 didn't appear to be excessive. So I'm guessing that these are set at 70 + 10% +3mph so 80mph.
I always work on the basis that my speedo will be up to 10% fast, so to be doing 80 I would be showing nearer 88, which I no longer do. I've steadied down a lot as I've got older!

A) Small cameras which would attach to the dash are an Aldi special this week £29-95 - I have one & it`s great.
B)A journalist on our local rag encountered a truck driving dangerously recently - he made a mental note of the company & when he got home phoned them and said that neither he nor any of his friends would ever use that company again because they employed idiots as drivers. Hit them in the pocket where it hurts. Also the embarrassment of a probable bollocking by his/her boss and the derision of the office staff.

The speed trigger points for cameras that most police use are noted as " guidelines" within a form of code of practice type documentation.
In Dyfed-Powys they wrre 10%+ 2 mph.
The reason they have this allowance is mainly twofold
10% for speedo inaccuracy.
+2 for a common sense allowance.
Speedometers are not permitted to read low but are allowed +10%.
That has been in force for some time and is well known to kit builders for the IVA test.
I just wonder when it will be tightened up by the introduction of suitable GPS systems.
Next time you use your satnav compare its speed reading with your car speedo.

Yes, there has to be an allowance for speedometer error, which makes me wonder why Richard Brunstrom, ex chief constable of North Wales, ever threatened to prosecute any driver doing even 1 mph over the speed limit. It just didn't make sense.

My wife was fined for doing 74 on a motorway and no, there were no other reduced speed limits.

As has been mentioned, the "limit +10% +2" is a guidline issued by the Association of Chief Police Officers and can be varied by the force Chief Constable.

In Wiltshire this guideline is followed. But I know Bedfordshire Police wanted to make it +2mph on the M1, but were "advised" by the Government not to do so, possibly because they said that the reason was to raise money, because they needed more!

I use my GPS as a guide. The Roadster had a speedo that was very close to being accurate. The Plus 8 over reads by about 4%. So 80 on the clock is about 76 true, which is the speed I normally maintain...using the cruise control.

On the M3 50mph Average section I keep at exactly 50 by GPS. It is amazing how few drivers can maintain a steady speed.
