Afternoon all,

It’s quite hot here in the UK, and couldn’t sleep, so at 4am I went to play with some spanners, my BB is terrible, it whines and the backlash sounds like a couple of bricks left loose in the rear storage.

(Backlash as you can feel it, rotating the prop).

I found it quite easy to get to once you work out how to access the compartment, (4 x M6 bolts, under the rear try). I highly recommend having a look at doing this yourselves. It’s a satisfying job, and it all goes back in a doddle.

So my car a 2012 model, has now just over 10k on it. It’s been serviced over the years, by a main dealer.

What I found was no leaks, but look what came out, measured in a standard pub type wine glass, so way to little in there.

Dirty indeed, and the sludge on the magnet was thicker than my dear old nan's rice pudding.

Anyhow, cleaned it all up, and flushed it though with some motor oil, then set about with some nice fresh extreme pressure 80w 90.

Filled to the breather, so guessing about half litre give or take.

Certainly smoother, feels better, now it might be physiological as I have just been nice to it, but when you see oil in that state you have to wonder how it’s so bad?

I still need to shim mine, or get a refurb, but I would say for the effort it was, it was enjoyable and rewarding.

Yes it's not to bad a job. There is usually a hex cap bolt above the drain bolt, it should normally be filled until it runs out of this hole on level ground. The breather hole might be over filling it. It's 330ml from memory. It's usually 90/140 gear oil, EP oil might be ok but isn't normally used if there is phosphor bronze in there as the sulphur additives can attack it,

Just out of curiosity, how many miles since the last oil change?

Hi
That looks like a later model bevel box with the breather on the side. My early 2012 model original bevel box had a breather tube exiting from the top and routed up and over to end on the unside of the body level with rear wheel.
Not sure when the change was made.
Box boxes have been noisy

RPM-Morgan serviced this at 8700 miles, so just 2000 miles ago.

It would seem that we still need to keep an eye on the bevel box oil. This looks like the sludge that plagued 3 wheelers a while back.

2000 miles since laat oil change, i would not expect to see so much crap stuck to the drain plug.

Didn't see it for myself but told following 1000 mile service that there was debris on the BB's magnetic drain plug. Not unusual apparently and was told my box is a relatively quiet one, so not too worried. Dealer was happy to re-fill box with the Redline Shockproof heavy I supplied.

Must admit that a 140 mile drive yesterday whilst wearing crash helmet, earplugs and further helped with some sound proofing I fitted, was an absolute pleasure.

Problem is the quieter one noise becomes, the better you hear others - sometimes you just can't win wink

The manual states at every service. This means every 3000 miles after first service, and also includes engine oil/filter change.

Engine oil change, is that the same for bikes as well?
