Well now. At last the chain drive is active. A couple of short runs under my belt ( pun intended ). And a longish one planned for tomorrow. All seems well so far and the machine is a dream to drive to say nothing about the lower noise levels. Amazing project! http://www.bleazey.co.uk/M3W.html Great report. Reads like a case study for IMechE! Would be fascinating to see a Morgan response to this (I would expect the belt drive to be justified based on avoiding things like lubrication, although all the "noisy bevel box" threads indicate a cost to pay). The loctite would be excused as "playing safe sir". Missing swinging arm plastic plug should be on a reassembly checklist for dealers. Wonder if lubrication could be done via some kind of drip mechanism? Probably would have to be at the bevel box i.e. "fixed" end.

Ask Harley...belts are improvements over chains. The only reason to go "back" to a chain is to support incredibly boosted power upgrades, looks, or room for more rubber ( a trend that has died out).

I admire your work but in 20,000 miles, I have never had the belt jump a tooth and with the SuperMax rear sprocket, I no longer have aluminum dust all over the interior. Nice to know it is doable.

Wow what a fascinating project.
Well done Phil.
Whilst belts are possibly considered more up to date ( by the likes of HD) this conversion seems to suit the Morgan very well.
Am in awe at the skill involved.

It's great to see stuff like this being done, I just love reading about other folk's engineering exploits, especially when done as nicely as this.
Not meaning to pee on your bonfire or anything, but has anyone considered some kind of automatic belt tensioner like Buell used on the 1125? They seemed to be able to put down far more power than an M3W produces, and it would seem to be an easier mod than converting to chain drive?

An excellent description: most of the hard part seems ot have been preparing the pullys to make them into sprocket carriers. Done as a production run it would probbly be just as economical to start from scratch.
There is an opportunity for someone to offer this conversion as a service.
All it needs is a ScottOiler to keep the chain oily and I'd expect a chain life of 20,000 miles.
