I read with interest some of the problems with Aero 8 electrics. I experienced problems of my own with the series II on my trip to Italy and France in September.

On the way to the Dover ferry the left hand indicators were permanently illuminated even with the ignition off and the keys removed. Right hand indicators and hazard warning would not work at all.

The only thing to do to prevent flattening the battery and confusing other road users was to remove the fuse.

I contacted the factory and was advised to reset the body control module. This I did to no avail, as a consequence I toured through Europe for three weeks with no indicators. That made life interesting.

I have just had the car in for service and the fault was located in the body control module which has been replaced, thankfully under warranty.


It was good to have the car back with indicators that worked however after having two new tyres fitted the tyre pressure/temp monitor does not recognise the front tyres.

With hindsight I suspect the wheels have been swopped over when they were refitted.

The mechanic has tried without success to reboot the system, reading from a smarttyre owner’s manual that does not appear to have been passed onto the owner. If anyone would like a copy let me know as I now have one on .pdf

I will let the group know if I have any success when I find the time to work on the car. If not I can see the monitor being replaced with an oil pressure gauge

Ray, the tyre pressure monitors are a known to be flakey (so much so they were dropped during the S4 production run and early on in the Aeromax production). The strange aspect is that some people never experience a problem with them and others have constant issues.

Because my car was delivered without the monitor, I decided to have tweeters fitted for the stereo. This involved removing the clock (which is the same size as the TPM) but I never saw the point of it given the location. It has improved the sound quality but also solved the issue of what to do with the space created by removing the monitor.

I had the tyre pressure gauge changed mid way through ownership it worked okay for a year then gave up the ghost again. I think is was caused by a loose wire in the connections to the module.

From the description of the problem it maybe you need to run the search function to find the sensors in the tyres. Good luck with it as I found the manual to about as much use a chocolate tea pot.

Never had any issues with the tyre monitor in my ownership - it would occasionally 'ignore' all the wheels early in a journey, but usually after a few miles they would all register. I just put this down the the 'normal' issues with a wireless setup. The sensors are easily damaged during tyre replacement, so i suspect this is what has happened here. (Same thing happened to me on my S1).

Prior to picking the car up from SGT all wheels were removed and refurbished, whoever did the work managed it without upsetting the tyre monitor sytem.

I suspect it may be the inexperience of the crew who fitted the new tyres that caused the problem this time.

The absence of indicators did not detract from the joy of touring the continent, in fact it added an element of fun with the 'left hand Kath' Any which way but loose style.

SGT as you point out are experienced in handling Aeros and the tyre sensors so would have got this right

My understanding is that if the wheels (with sensors attached) are not removed too far away from the car then no problems occur. It is when the sensors lose contact with the car that the whole system needs re-setting.

Intersting that SGT had the wheels refurbished with no problems. It must either have been done next to the car, or the sensors were removed kept inthe car and replaced correctly or SGT did a correct reset.

I can't see the wheels being swopped over causing any issues except indicating an error in the wrong wheel. Ie they would still work but you would be confused if it indicated front offside has an issue when it would be front nearside.

I cannot comment on how the Aero 8 sensors are set up; however, if it is anything like the Mustang, the sensors are attached to a band that is strapped around the inside drum of the wheel.

If the tyres gets changed, a common problem is that the band becomes loose (or the fitter knocks it off all together) and the sensors start malfunctioning as a result. I am not sure if this is how the Aero 8 was set up but it is worth considering.

On the Aero the sensors are attached just behind the valve with an allen key bolt.

I recently, and unfortunately, kerbed one of my wheels to avoid an oncoming car so had the tyre and sensor switched over to a spare wheel that I have. Sensor and car were kms apart for several hours yet all worked normally when the new wheel was put back on.

As someone else has said, you can access full manuals on the system, which are no longer sold for cars, via the Smartire website.

On my S1 I've had just one false alert in 2 years, otherwise system has been totally reliable. If though Smartire don't make, nor support, the system for cars anymore it might though suggest they had many issues.
