I was hoping to get some thoughts on this rust on the exhaust of my 2014 M3W.

I have treated it with ACF50 a few times now, including leaving it for a few days without use to keep it on the metal for longer before burn-off.

Has anyone else experienced this development? Any ideas on how to combat it? Worrisome?

Thanks.

Ouch! With that amount of rust I would be worried too - must check my '14 M3W tomorrow!

End caps of the flexible part are mild steel. I suggest complaining to the dealer as I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to be.

My thoughts also, hopefully it's still in warranty.

Thanks, guys. I've reached out to the dealer, but frankly at over 1,000 miles away, I may need to rely on a less than ideal solution (thanks for the high-heat paint suggestion). I'll see what the dealer says first though.

My only concern is that with that much rust, high-heat paint may only serve a band-aid and I could end up with some catastrophic failure of the end cap...

The rusted part appears to be a galvanised mild steel collar allowing it to be crimped onto the flexy and shrunk onto the stainless pipe.

The issue seems to be the poor galvanising.

It's probably easier just to replace them with stainless steel equivalents, they aren't very expensive, around £25-£30 in the UK, depending on size.

Any local exhaust place or general fabricators would be able to weld them in place if you didn't fancy using clamps.

Most flex joints like these that I've looked at on other projects are listed as stainless steel, but still have aluminized steel on the ends. Over time these can still rust.

There may be some specialty shops that offer complete stainless flex joints, but I haven't found any yet.
