Unbeknowns to us it must have been the grounding of Morgan ownership. It's changed from umbrella piss take to hood piss take now.

My brother & I walked near 3 miles to primary school, if lucky we got a lift part way in the posties van. One winter we got there through the snow drifts & some kids whose house we could see from school did not.

It was ever thus. In the seventies I commuted 25 miles each way in my Midget and rarely didn't get through. Often in appalling weather and deep snow.

Invariably those who lived in the town didn't show up for work.

That town was Chesterfield. One of the employees lived at Matlock - a testing drive there in snow. He always got through in his Viva HC with a bag of cement in the boot.

When I was at school in the fifties nobody had a car where I lived, at 5 years old I walked a mile each way to school with some older kids from our road. In the sixties I lived in east London and worked in Alton Hants and commuted in my Midget roof down through sun or snow, ah those were the days.

The problem is there is a whole generation of people who don't know what a bag of cement is let alone know what to do with it. I had my eyes opened this week. We exhibited at the Royal Cheshire Show this week and when we went to set up on Monday night after a week of heavy rains the show ground was reminiscent of Glastonbury. We were OK in our Freelander pulling a trailer and got through vast amounts of mud without any problems. What rally amazed me was the number of people, of all ages, driving small front wheel drive vehicles through the same mud and being totally surprised that they were stranded in the middle of it. One man was so determined to get through the mud he got towed out three times in 10 minutes by the tractors who happily took £20 a time off him. The other bemusing one was watching the guy driving the white Audi A4 who seemed reminiscent of many of those who often cut you up on the motorways. He got towed out by the tractor and decided to have another go. His front left wheel spinning in the mud was covering the stall which was completely set up and he was oblivious because he was only thinking of himself until the stall holder came over and gave him both barrels with lots of words with t's and w's in. It was an insight into the nation that went off to vote last Thursday.

Because thanks to media hysteria, parents imagine there is a paedo on every street corner. Truth is there are no more perverts now than there were then, most kids knew who to avoid, and the whole business wasnt then elevated to the importance it now has.

It doesnt help that the old concept of housing round the factory and a school nearby has gone as work has moved to city centre offices and workers have moved away. With ever more mothers communing the result is inevitable.
