In the process of restoring a 54 Morgan. Went to bleed brakes, bummer it is leaking out of the rear cylinders. Ok, will order out new rear cylinders. Thought I would check on the front ones. Went to pull off the front nut on the spindle, it is cross threaded. Not sure how you fix that. Could use some ideas. Also, do you use a puller to get the front drum off?

Thanks,
Ben

Normal procedure with drum brakes is to back off the adjuster/s till the wheel turns very freely with no contact at all from the brakes.

The use of a puller is normally a recipe for disaster as the linings will stick to the drum and the springs and any other attachment device gets pulled apart. Not good.

I don't know the drum braked Morgan (except older three wheelers) but in your case, I'd hope the drum comes off without the wheel bearings. Even then, one can get the bearings apart without using a puller.

Are you sure it's not cross threaded and that's it's not the split pin being still in place that's confusing things?

I know nothing about a Morgan of that age but other cars of that age often had a left hand thread on one side.

Strange for it to be cross threaded if its on to its correct tightness. Try the nut from the other side to see if the thread is damaged or left hand thread.

Neither my 1930 three wheeler, or the 1972 4/4 I owned have a left hand thread on the 'spindle' (don't think it is called that). No need for it as the split pin holds everything in place nicely.

Is there thread showing with the nut in place? As usual, photographs help hugely.

Well, the other side came off without a problem. It appears the hang up is the bearing is not sliding off of the spindle. I have put on Liquid Wrench to hopefully penetrate what is holding the bearing to the spindle. The threads on the spindle are not in the best of shape. I plan to order out a new nut and then see if I can chase the threads. I would like to add a picture, but still working on how to load it.

Thanks,
Ben

I have encountered bearings jamming, but thankfully it's not usual. Best advice using a puller is to not try very hard, but do it in such a way that you can leave it under tension overnight. If your luck is anything like mine, it'll come free overnight when no-one is looking!

A picture needs to be hosted, something like Photobucket, Picassa or quite a few others.

Then, with the address that gives you a picture in a browser, say:
http://www.slidingpillar.co.uk/images2/tax_disc_little.jpg

Click on the fourth button above your reply, click on non-floating image then paste the same address into the box provided. You get this:

Same code but with swirly brackets replacing square ones;
{img}http://www.slidingpillar.co.uk/images2/tax_disc_little.jpg{/img}

Note, if your browser won't display the image, then it is exceedingly unlikely that the forum software would do so either. Most common cause of problems is code ending in other than <dot>jpg
