I was bringing my grandson home from passing his theory driving test, when I saw a mean black machine behind me on the local bypass. I watched him hold back till ,the road was clear to overtake. Then he went. It was porsche 918 the speed he took off was amazing, never seen a road car go like it. Almost sucked my Peugeot 107 lawnmower with it.

Quite a good example for him, after his driving theory test where he no doubt was tested on speed limits etc

I've often wondered about overtakes in a powerfull car myself.

Sometimes I will pass a slower car and think the closing speed should have been less, especially if the driver had not been aware of me. Sometimes difficult to do though, as one wants to execute the pass as soon as possible and return to the correct side of the road.

It's a different level of confidence to get past someone and something you get used to very quickly.

Yes, but the overtaken driver will never get used to it.

It's the oncoming drivers who are not used to it. You see them belligerently flashing the empty carriageway 200 metres in front of them where there had been a car for less time than it took for them to reach for their light stalk.

Just consider that, for an instant while overtaking, you are on the wrong side of the road, with one hand on the steering wheel, in neutral and with no feet available for braking.

Overtaking should be attempted only with the utmost caution!

I agree with Felix above - no matter how powerful the car, speed limits should be observed.Plus some people buy supercars and havn`t got a clue how to handle them - I hit the curb yesterday avoiding a very powerful car who could not keep on his side of the road as he took a corner too fast - and that was on a suburban side road. The place for speed and fancy overtaking is on the track IMHO.

It's not just about supercars. The art of overtaking has been lost somewhere. As a regular user of the Fosse Way, convoys of cars will follow a slow mover without any sign of an attempted overtake.

Were you to do three or four in one go (ahem!), they don't like it...............

Only if you are changing gear. But why would you do that?

As Dave W says, overtaking is an art. Part of that art is making the acceleration run and gearchange before you pull out. In any decent supercar, you are actually backing off the throttle as you go past to match roadspeed as you pull in ahead.

But we are agreed on the importance of caution.
