So apart from ranting I'm afraid that I just have to accept that a lot of other drivers just don't give a toss about anything or anyone else on the road and, if I try to pass them I assume that they will try to kill me by doing something unpredictable. Or I have to go out early or late and avoid the traffic as best I can.

Yes, they are out to get you, consciously or unconsciously. Half of them don't actually want to be driving, they just have no other way to get from A to B. First lesson from a "Bike-safe" Instructor: "Assume every other vehicle on the road is driven by a homicidal idiot who wants to kill you" Second Lesson: "Imagine an ellipse round your bike. It should go forward to the point where you can stop, each side of you the width of the lane and behind half the distance in front. If ANYTHING enters the ellipse take action to remove it: you can go faster, slower, stop, whatever. But get the threat away from you." Both lessons work just as well when driving.

Words of wisdom.....I think that the Bike Safe course is extremely valuable, no matter how experienced people feel they are.
Sadly, I have not heard of anything similar for those on 3 or 4 (or even more) wheels - except of course for the Police run Fast Driving Courses, but they are not open to the general public.

It is instructive to watch people overtake: how many times do you see the overtaking car moving out rapidly, to overtake, appearing to lean over. The vehicle must surely be unbalanced at the point just prior to and just after the maneuver.

I thought this thread would be a nice chat about the performance of the Porche 918. TM never fails to amaze as it wanders around.   Always a joy to follow.

The other thing I used to enjoy on the bike was coming up behind another vehicle and waiting - patiently - to see how long it took before the driver realised I was there; I could look straight into their rear view mirrors and could tell quite easily whether or not they knew I was there; sometimes it took them minutes rather than seconds to realise there was a bike behind them. Of course wearing a white helmet, reflective jacket and riding a predominantly big white bike with some blue and red bits here and there meant that nine times out of ten the first response to seeing me in their mirror was to hit the panic switch and brake! But at least I knew that when I came to overtake they knew I was there.....too many bikers (and possibly cars, especially those that come up at speed) are hit by vehicles pulling out of a line to overtake without going though the mirror, signal, mirror procedure....all down to lazy and dangerous driving. Sadly this is almost a weekly occurrence here in North Wales (and no doubt other areas of the UK as well).
I dont know about "enjoy". I started riding for blood bikes maybe 2 years ago , and the bike we get is fitted out as a police bike with all the high vis reflective colours. So the only difference you see if you are in front of one and look in your mirrors is the word BLOOD where you would see HEDDLU or POLICE. So the startling thing is how often you come up behind someone and it takes even 2 or 3 minutes before they see you and often react by jamming on the brakes. Doesnt matter if they are doing the speed limit, they still often brake. Then when they see the word BLOOD and realise you arent plod, the reaction is often an aggressive acceleration or overtake. And all of this is far worse / more common at weekend. Its also more common with older big cars, say the 10 year old big Merc. Why?

I'm sorry Ray, probably my fault, but in my defence, Mark mentioned speed etc  Howard makes a good point, the first thing drivers often think about is the brake pedal when they feel vulnerable, same going past a roadside camera, even if they are within the limit, you just know the brake lights are going to come on when following.

Very annoying when they do it on a derestricted rural road when they are only driving at around 50 mph anyway...

I bought it new and had it for about a year - it was like driving the Titanic from the pointy end. Great fun, massively wide and insanely fast. It took me a few years (and a few supercars) to realise that not only did I always feel a bit of cock driving them, but there was nowhere to use them. The Lamborghini was a fun car up to 150, but it was the 150-200 range that set it apart. But unless you have a love of prison food, there's nowhere you can do that speed. Country lanes meant driving on the cat's eyes as it was so wide. So it became a dual carriageway or motorway only car - no fun to be honest. The Morgan, on the other hand, is usable and a lot of fun at legal speeds.

Poor choice of word by me....I should have used something other than 'enjoy'. Perhaps I should have said 'I used to take a perverse pleasure' instead!
I am really surprised by some of the responses you have received though....if it was me passing them then perhaps it might be understandable as they had been duped....but at least you do have a valid reason to liveried up in such a fashion....and moving blood to those that need it surely has to be a good thing? Nowt so queer as folk....
I have no answer on the question of those driving 'bigger older cars though'....perhaps the big car is a substitute for some inferior body part or being overtaken represents a challenge to the Alpha Male in them.....best option is just to twist the right wrist and watch them get even smaller in the rear view mirrors!
