Hi I use thse lockable straps - not the cheapest but the are soft and dont scratch anything and have steel cables inside preventing cutting They also help to hold the case on the rack Thule Straps

Being sensible again, something like this Pacsafe Cable seems a handy thing, although it's just a metal cable and I doubt it's 'sheathed' to protect any leather etc. The Thule ones look good. Never seen one in the flesh, so I'd guess a walk around Halfords would pay dividends on that. It's not the ultimate security I'd be after, but the grabbing of a bag at traffic lights or when you've left it over lunch etc. The golden rule is to keep anything vaguely valuable to others under cover, on the basis that if no-one knows it's there, why try & steal? The cabled bags are a second line of defence and make sense...unless you have a large anti-social dog also attached...

I use a cable with a built in combination lock that I bought in a camping shop. It's long enough to pass through the sleeves of coats and the steering wheel, useful if we've got the flying jackets but don't want to walk around with them. I left my rather nice travel bag behind Roger-Cheshire's Morgan's seats unsecured while at TOTH on Saturday and pleased to say it was still there 8 hours later which I was pleasantly surprised about as there were some really dodgy characters roaming around mainly wearing helmets to hide their faces!! It was probably safe because we were a few cars along from Graham sitting in his chair chewing his sausage.  That cant have been a pretty sight.

Huge, great to see you and your new car at Shelsley.
We're off to Portugal via the Picos to watch Mario race up the hill at Caramulo.
Everyone, thank you for your inputs. As a result I have decided to buy the Pacsafe Wrapsafe cable as suggested by StringersBestMate, as I believe this will be a more versatile solution should I need to secure more than one bag behind the seats at a later date.
I will run the cable through the seat frame rather than drilling a hole in the woodwork.
Now to finalise the spares and tools for the journey. Usually I only carry the tools supplied with the car. The other posts on this subject have been very useful.

If you are taking all the stuff that's been listed you are going to need a trailer! Remember spare undies may be the order of the day, as your going with Mr. I can get there first as mine's quicker, I wonder who that might be

Would be great to hear in due course where you stay and what the route is like etc as that sounds a great destination, brought much closer by the ferries to Santander etc.
